This is literal whataboutism. Refute the comment if you have a valid point to make.

Erm, no? it is pointing out hypocrisy? If you are against the thing China does, when US does the thing also be against it. US has always done what China does, now trump is doing it vocally. So it is easier to point out the hypocrisy in it. Before there was plausible deniability. Thank you for your attention to this matter

Well, it's more complicated than that.

Let's imagine that China and USA do some equally bad thing against my privacy, let's say intercept and store all the traffic between myself and my AI provider. I am inclined to excuse it from USA and not from China because it's much more likely that China would use it to undermine the security of my home country. USA on the other hand, is literally a military ally of my home country.

I don't naively think that USA is a 100% benign country because of the alliance and that my interests are aligned with them. Trump especially has made that part worse. They're just more aligned with me than China.

The idea that Chinese citizens could’ve prevented the Tiananmen massacre with a bunch of home printed AK-47s is silly. The government had tanks. The same applies in the US.

Yes, strawmen are silly. You don't prevent the Tiananmen massacre or fight tanks; you murder an officer (or his family) while he's out shopping.

To be clear, do you think that the appropriate response to Tiananmen Square is to murder policemen out shopping? What is that supposed to achieve?

Police or military. Whoever is doing the oppressing. It could also be their families at home or school. It makes them aware that joining an oppressive force is likely to lead to retaliation and makes them reconsider. When almost half the population is armed, as in the US, they'd have to always be paranoid about being shot by any random person. Or if they're mass murdering their citizens and you think you might be one of their victims, you can at least take some of them with you first.

The point is if you're e.g. the victim of a genocide or other mass killing, you don't just lie down and hope it stops. You recognise that you're in a war. Denial isn't going to help.
