I feel what makes it work well here is also that it's not perfectly transparent so you can still see it wave in the wind and make out it's rectangular shape. I'd definitely take that into consideration for a digital version.

Well given there's no abuse of refractive light bending it looks more like whatever frosted glass existed before liquid glass.
Also this flag has square corners.
