Frankly I've tried quite a few clients and haven't found one I can settle for. I used Mailspring for a while because it was close to being a gmail experience, but that went some kind of bad way I don't remember and I don't think is developed anymore.

I want a client that is simple but flexible by default, extensible, themeable would be nice, and for the love of god has key shortcuts for everything THAT CAN BE CHANGED. LOOKING AT YOU, THUNDERBIRD.

Thunderbird is almost usable for me, but the UI is just absolutely abysmal. The kicker is not being able to change key shortcuts, making Thunderbird unusable for me.

My notes say: No IMAP or other way to export emails, they're trapped in the service. CEO is a Trump supporter.

I'll be the "Ackchyually" person for those who don't know. Proton tweeted support for a _single_ thing the Trump administration did, on a subject that mattered to Proton. Otherwise, they have a strict neutrality position, and their CEO responded to the accusations on Reddit.

3 is a result of Gmail's imap implementation, and can be squarely blamed on Google. They did this intentionally. Instead of mapping the your tags as imap labels, they mapped them as a folder structure.

While it certainly shouldn't be necessary, I do feel like it should be possible to work around this in a mail client, however; don't emails these days all have unique ids? If not, storing a hash of the message content+headers/timestamps for every message should be enough to keep a local index of what each message is tagged as (given the implementation where each message shows up in multiple places). I can somewhat understand Thunderbird not wanting to make compatibility shims for specific vendors poor implementations.

Over the years I've recommended Migadu and still do. Affordable and reliable with usage based pricing. As for the email client I personally prefer Thunderbird on PC and FairEmail on Android. https://migadu.com/ https://email.faircode.eu/

Fairemail is great. Better than Thunderbird and any other mail client around. Every so often I see a new mail client pop up for Android advertising that it does X better than any other client; I look at it and it's either built on top of either aosp or some other oss email client (or a rewrite of same) with X feature bolted on, often with numerous features missing. If you want a full email client, go with fairemail.

Reminder to take a look at what nontrivial OSS software you use every day that you've never paid for, and consider a donation (I recommend GitHub sponsorship as a method that currently charges no fees to either the donor or the recipient)

From this I can infer you are not using Chrome (the source of those can't be disabled prompts).

That's correct - I've never used Chrome, I've used Chromium but not now. I'm using gmail with Vivaldi (chrome-based) and Firefox.

The comment I was replying to was wondering why people installed apps to read email instead of using the browser based clients. So I don't understand your point ...?

You can have a copy of your emails for offline use in your browser.

Less so as a reliable backup.

Totally agree. I hit another crazy iOS bug this morning I hadn't hit for a few months - search for an old email - specifically my old Ableton licence from 2022... Return to my inbox 20-30 mins later on that device and it's now full with every email returned from my earlier Ableton search. Open my email on any other machine (MacBook, iPad, etc.) and it shows correctly, but iOS will keep showing all those old emails until I manually move each one back to its original folder. Pretty annoying if they come from different folders, and deleting them deletes the original in the email account. Persists across reboots, so again clearly spotlight search borks out and wrecks the local mail index. It needs a "rebuild" button, like Mac Mail has to "solve" this.
