I have seen the same thing in a local slack I frequent. Not weekly, but once a month or so. It doesn't last long, but it sure is annoying. Sometimes they even join and then spam DM rather than post in a public channel. It must pay off often enough to make it it worth it, but I can't imagine hiring someone I found through a spam message.

There's no way this pays off. It's probably some enterprising scammer that's selling his bots to individuals (aka suckers) to spam with.

because I haven't found the spam filter to be bullet proof, whereas I have found the filtering into Promotions (aka my spam folder) to work flawlessly It's also slightly easier to drag and drop them into Promotions than mark them as spam. I could of course do both but that's just more work

Gmail product managers are scratching their heads reading this.

That should be the assumption in an ethical society. Especially given the current economic context. Veil of ignorance principle.

Any "hireable" expert can run into bad luck. A person down on their luck doesn't imply "unhireable." Those recruiters who assume something so illogical - well, perhaps job seekers in this forum are overall better off without such illogical recruiters in the pool. If they make such a wrong assumption at the start, who knows what other illogical assumptions they'll make once the job starts.

You are upset because of your expectations. As the saying goes, happiness is your situation minus expectations. If you are upset about someone emailing you, what will happen when you are called for interview and you think there’s hope, and you then you’re ghosted, or receive decline email few minutes after?

I've gotten that too, now that everyone ITT is talking about it. I had no idea what was going on with it at the time and ignored it. Amusing to know that there could be state actors behind it.

The version I got explicitly suggested that I create such an account for the purpose if I don't already have one (I didn't, and of course still don't).

That's because you all share your email addresses directly in your posts. I put my email address in my profile, and anyone genuinely interested is just one click away from getting my address from there or from my website which i also link to. Aside from a handful of exceptions I get no spam whatsoever, despite posting for years and not obscuring my address at all. And what I do get is most likely hand-written.

I've been getting a little bit from what I think must be people scraping my GitHub. (Or their OpenClaw agents electing to do so, or something.)

Someone posted an interest in a field in a who-wants-to-be-hired thread. A lot of people who investigate job openings aren't actually experiencing "career troubles", nor are they "desperate" as other comments noted. Again, we're talking about that thread, not this follow up submission.

They then complained that someone spammed them and it got their hopes up (which is kind of strange, fwiw). Then they detailed their career troubles. That is orthogonal.

So people are saying "leave the poors in the who wants to be hired thread alone!". It's comically patronizing.

This whole thread is hilarious and sad. I think the most sad is that guy in a parallel comment who notes that there are millionaires (!) that participate here so everyone should be on their best behaviour! How unbelievably pathetic.

I use an specific email address for github and git commits and I can assure you people were scraping github for a while, even before AI.

This is not in the recruiter's interest though, because you may just go past them and apply to the company directly, so they miss out on their revenue. I love picking apart a recruiter's emails, in a handful of cases I see the advert and I'm like "Oh yeah I used to work there". Go and React in a telecom company in NL near where I live? My favorite was the game of trying to figure out if multiple recruiters were trying to forward me to the exact same job/hiring company and trying to get them to stop stepping on each other's toes and try to a pick a "winner" recruiter for that specific role. It's a weird thing to miss, but this layoff cycle so far I haven't seen any recent recruiter emails at all, which seems strange on multiple levels.

A couple of years ago I got two call/email pairings from recruiters at the same company about three hours apart. With the same (Indian) name so I was confused. "Didn't I talk to you three hours ago?"

Yes I used to be naive enough to answer calls from random 3rd party recruiters.
