Curious why you are no longer interested in US based defense roles? Is it just because working in the defense space gets old?

I’m Mark, a Dutch product designer working from strategy to shipped code. Always have, it’s what got me hooked on design over a decade ago. Since, I’ve worn many hats working in startups and for myself.

I love collaborating with founders and small teams. By working across design, engineering, and product, I help them build simple, effective, and reliable software.

I’m ideally looking for a company where I get to go beyond making pictures of interfaces. A place where I get to work end-to-end from ideas to visuals to the finished product.

About me: Recent MSCS graduate from Georgia Tech, specialized in Computing Systems (network and cybersec-focused, with some work in DBMS). My main focus areas are computer networks and security, and I'm looking for related full-time roles (e.g., network engineer, systems engineer, security engineer, SWE/SDE). I'm a fast learner and have picked up languages and frameworks quickly during my time at Georgia Tech - always willing to learn more!

Experience: I have academic research experience at the Internet Security & Society Lab at GT; I built a website with API access for RPKI and ROA information to aid wider adoption of RPKI. I've TA'd a course on Applied Cryptography ('OMSCS' format; this was fully remote, with students and fellow TAs in various timezones).

Visa/Sponsorship: I have 3 years of work authorization (OPT+STEM OPT) available for US-based employment, and would need visa support for EU/UK roles.

Senior backend engineer available for contract, fractional, contract-to-hire, or full-time opportunities. I have 30+ years of experience building and operating production systems across startups, SaaS, media, financial services, telecom, and public safety domains. I've worked in both early-stage and growth-stage companies and enjoy owning systems end-to-end, from architecture and implementation through deployment and operations. For the past 13 years I've focused primarily on Ruby on Rails backend platforms, APIs, PostgreSQL, cloud infrastructure (AWS/GCP), and production reliability. My experience includes backend architecture, distributed systems, database performance tuning, cloud migrations, DevOps ownership, and operating customer-facing systems in production. I enjoy helping teams solve scaling, reliability, modernization, and operational challenges. Particularly interested in backend, platform, infrastructure, and data-intensive systems, though I'm comfortable contributing across the stack when needed. Available to help with Rails modernization, production reliability, cloud migrations, PostgreSQL performance tuning, backend platform development, and API-heavy applications.
