Maybe it’s my own lived experience coloring my perspective, but man the author feels like a centrist sitting upon an imagined moral high ground. “Violence is bad but inevitable” is the kind of milquetoast non-committal position one takes when they have nothing else to contribute to the discussion at hand. My own take goes that one step further, as I said in a prior comment rebutting Altman’s whinging blog post: > You…

Yep, there is a reason why the Four Boxes of Liberty lists the ammo box as the last one: When soap, ballot, and jury are exhausted, it is both inevitable and moral to invoke the ammo box. Violence is never justified as the first step, but it is both expected and justified as the last possible step.

They thought that too in the industrial revolution. You can look back and see the jobs that came out of it. But at the time, it wasn't obvious to the people effected that there would be jobs again. We may have hindsight bias in evaluating something that happened, but to the people that it happened to it was terrifying.

MIT's motto is mens et manus : mind and hand. These are, basically, the two primary attributes of human labor. They're the reason almost anyone gets hired to do anything. Our brains and our opposable thumbs are what set us ahead of the animal kingdom. The industrial revolution first attempted to replace our hands. But the labor that was displaced had places to go: into smaller-scale manual work, where mass-production…

Why do you need a job in the scenario where machines have replaced all human labor?

You're forgetting that work is a means, not an end, for humanity.

Wouldn't they shut down the Internet for me but not for thee?

So, are you guys saying, that the mass killings of protestors, did NOT happen? This is all just made up?

Not sure why you are asking me about it. The point of my comment is that Iran will allow streaming what they'd want people to see.

How they were created doesn't change what they are, or how humans choose to use them.

[flagged]

again, all the things you listed are just humans acting like humans, not aliens. Thinking these things are not things that fall within you own human nature is rather arrogant don't you think.

My point is that wild imaginations about the current state of LLMs is the problem, we wouldn't even consider connecting a random number generator or a statistical model to a weapons system but if we start thinking of it as an intelligence some actually would be tempted to do so.

I'm sorry, but do you realize it's 2026, not 1980s anymore? Whatever you call intelligence, if LLMs don't pass your "intelligence test", there is a lot of people who won't pass it either. And I'm pretty sure that there is plenty of countries who would make soldiers out of those people and give them weapons.

The definition of intelligence hasn't changed since the 1980's, most would say that true intelligence requires intentionality which is not something LLMs are capable of, defining intelligence can turn into a fairly deep philosophical debate (which I have no interest in having).

I don't care if Altman is secretly a good person. I care very deeply that he is taking actions to harm the world in grievous ways and is not doing any visible thing to mitigate the extreme damage he will do. "Altman is secretly a good guy" doesn't pay people's mortgages.

I doubt it nets positive or even cancels out the damage, but if we're taking a fuller picture, then we shouldn't also assume Altman / other AI company CEOs are "taking actions to harm the world in grievous ways" for shits and giggles, or for large payday. Despite what skimming HN would make one believe, AI tools are actually useful in science, technology, and all kinds of productive work. So the silver lining is this…

I don't think that Altman is a Dr. Evil level villain who just wants to hurt people. I instead think that he does not care about the damage he causes on his path to personal wealth and glory and I think that this is precisely as terrifying. I'm sure that the machines made of my corpse would be used for productive purposes too.

Altman probably won't torture my cats to death. What a guy.

Lobbying is "directly advocating for or against particular legislation or regulations." Writing your representative is lobbying. Fighting bad legislation is lobbying. Any good faith attempt to argue a position on a government policy is lobbying. Giving money to politicians or their campaigns is not lobbying, and it is already illegal for lobbyists to do so. What could and should be made illegal is allowing unlimited…

It's one thing when a bill on technology is misunderstood by regulators and insiders provide context on unintended consequences, another when checks are written such that the voice of polluting industries outweighs voters' desire for clean air and water.

I was replying to someone who said we should make lobbying illegal and they don't understand why it's accepted.

"Checks are written" is vague. What do you want to make illegal? Super PACs? I had just said they should be made illegal.

I'd like to emphasize that the above should be immediately obvious. The fact that it's not does not bode well for humanity's future. Billionaires simply _should not exist_. The fact that the power to shape societies is concentrated in so few can account for many of the existential threats we face today. AI is not "the problem", it's merely the latest symptom of our broken system and the prioritization of the wrong go…

>Billionaires simply _should not exist_. T If American billionaires couldn't exist then America would be even poorer and underdeveloped than Europe, the entire tech industry wouldn't exist, and it'd be entirely at the mercy of China. Because nobody's going to start a business in a country that violently confiscates their wealth just for being successful. The envy of people like yourself is a deep moral illness that d…

"violently confiscates their wealth just" Sure are jumping to some...conclusions there.

It's not complicated. Just tax the corporations and billionaires a fair share and setup UBI.

UBI: - 1. Will require a large increase in taxation. - 2. Will likely cause some form of inflation. - 3. Will not provide enough money for a majority of people to survive on. - 4. Has no significant political support in the US.

> Will require a large increase in taxation.

To billionaires and corps, as should be the case anyway.

> Will likely cause some form of inflation.

Based on what?

> Will not provide enough money for a majority of people to survive on.

Depends on how much is provided - the simple fix is to provide enough.

> Has no significant political support in the US.

This is the biggest hurdle, and it's because so many on the right have been brainwashed by outlets like Fox News. It is indeed a hard thing to overcome. Eventually as the older folks die out, it will come about naturally.

Magic or no, ultimately "AI" leads to labour displacement and it's just a continuation of the much broader trend of automation driven by computers. Labour displacement leads to an erosion of standards of living and in a world that ties purpose to work is an existential threat on a very practical level. It was always going to be met with violence once it became more than a curiosity for tinkerers.

>Labour displacement leads to an erosion of standards of living The two biggest labor displacements in human history were the agricultural and industrial revolutions, both of which resulted in enormous gains in human living standards. Can you think of a mass labor displacement that resulted in an overall erosion of living standards? I cannot.

the loom hurt English weavers (flat wages for 50 years) and decimated India's textile trade. also, Rust Belt deindustrialization.
