#282I had a good laugh at people recommending Ubuntu. I recently installed the very latest Ubuntu on a VM, started the launcher, typed "terminal" ... and looked in utter disbelief as it started showing me random movies and crap from Amazon. If that is your idea of a better operating system, try again.
I'm not an ubuntu defender but honestly, aren't a couple Amazon ads better (or let's call it less bad) than all the crapware OP talks about? We are talking 1 command against hours of fight against a whole system.

The Amazon search in Unity home lens (where you go to launch programs &c) is attempting to be a dynamic search so that results narrow as you type. Network latency means it sort of 'jumps' in groups of letters. Sometimes results corresponding to part of the words you type appear. This can produce 'interesting' results.

Its hard for Shuttleworth because he has burned millions and millions on Canonical and it is now clear that the company is going to fail. People simply will not pay for linux desktop support and there really is no other model. So all this crap they are doing, it is their death throes and they should be pitied and not mocked.
It is not clear that Canonical is going to fail, just that their support model for making desktop linux profitable failed. We are seeing them change their profit model with the Amazon links in unity, and their attempt to get into the android/desktop linux hybrid market. It remains to be seen how these play out.

You'd have had a better experience had you:
1. Installed Command Line Tools for Xcode instead of Xcode (you don't need the IDE now for build tools, and yes this used to be painful)
2. use homebrew instead of macports which is more actively maintained and generally works better

These ISO's should work on any machine as long as you have a valid Windows 7 Product Key.
I've always bought at least one OEM copy of Windows, or purchased upgrade copies when a new version is released. I picked up three copies of the Windows 7 DVD set (x32 and x64) for $40 each on Amazon, and you can pick up ISO's of Windows 8 directly from Microsoft for $40 a pop.

It takes exactly 30 seconds and it is fully automated. Punch in a string of numbers, hear back the activation code. No personal information, no humans involved. I too was dreading doing over the phone activation, but it was remarkably nice experience.

It would be interesting to see the list (or at least types) of programs you use that require Windows. I've got a CAD program that I've been using forever that does (TurboCAD) and I'm more facile in Corel Draw than Inkscape (which is horribly, horribly under-performing on the same hardware booted into Ubuntu 12.10).
For many this list has just one item: - Adobe Photoshop If you rely on it for work, than you can't just switch to Linux. GIMP is closer to paint than to PS.
People say Gimp has a different/worse UI, but roughly similar capabilities. Do you have a citation/basis to claiming Gimp is so much weaker?
