Being forced to release manuals doesn't make them good (thanks Massachusetts).

This is a misconception. The Massachusetts right-to-repair law didn't force Tesla to make their manuals free.

As others have pointed out here, other manufacturers like Ford and Toyota still charge for access to their manuals, even in Massachusetts. Tesla gives free access to anyone, worldwide.

Not sure - if I was designing it, feels like it would be a good way of getting the right build to the right car so that all the HW versions of each module are in line.

I'd imagine that the update includes all the possible hardware, and the update script actually decides which components to use. Like apt on Debian or yum on RHEL.

It appears that the Tesla is running a full Ubuntu Linux distro. And here's a small quip to entice passers-by to read more:

It's a mixed bag. This only applies to the infotainment system and not the autopilot computer. They've also revoked certificates from researchers personal cars in the past

FWIW, I think they share resources. I was able to crash the browser via a GPU benchmarking website while using autopilot. Autopilot disengaged and the “instrument cluster” lit up like a Christmas tree for a few seconds.

So I’d imagine an infotainment exploit would be able at least DOS the AP system.

charm.li covers Fords and many other makes too up to 2013 ish. It is a pirate archive site holding workshop manuals for thousands of cars. Very useful. Very free. Long may it stay hidden. ECU software development is sort of my day job. If you're going to go down this path, I seriously recommend getting the specialized plugs and connectors and making your own wiring harnesses to whatever size you need. It's absolutely easier than manhandling a full wiring harness or cutting one down. Cheaper, too.

The author mentions not being able to get the connector in single digit quantities, seems pretty specialized.

That sorta surprised me. Once I could identify a connector type from a schematic, it was almost never a huge problem getting them in small (1 to 5 piece) quantities. It's mostly a question of finding the right distributor.
