It's hilarious to me that you are acting like these features you are bringing up are exclusive to Mac! SSD larger than 2GB? That's not a differentiating feature of a Mac. As a completely random example, an HP Omen Transcend 14 has DUAL M.2 SSD slots and that's not even a high end PC laptop. Macs are the only systems on the market where you can't upgrade the storage after purchase and you're doing so at insane markups…

I never suggested those things are exclusive to a Mac. The comment I replied to said

And then proceeded to suggest a very specific model which has several limitations compared to what's available in a Mac.

Of course there are alternative options. The point is that each person has different priorities, and each available option has different trade offs.

M4 was already imo a more meaningful upgrade compared to m2/m3, and they increased the memory bandwidths too. But then, all apple silicon is good hardware, and I do not personally feel in any rush to upgrade, unless you want a specific upgrade like more ram.

I am having to use M4 at work and it is the worst piece of equipment I have used. Knowing how Apple releases more of the same, M5 won't be different.

It has 24GB and it is slow asf, takes forever to open apps and macOS somehow managed to be worse than Windows.

I am Linux user, and on macOS you CANNOT use:

- Ctlr + ABCVYXZ

- Shift/Ctrl + Insert: Copy/paste for terminal

- F5

- Home/End

- Backspace?? Fn + Del like WTF!!

- Select with touchpad?? You must physically press its button like WTF

- Mouse with backward/forward button?? Good luck!!

macOS feels like it was built for people who depend heavily on mouses, if you are used to Linux able to get a lot done with keyboard shortcuts that work even on Windows mind you, you are gone.

The amount of time wasted fighting macOS is insane.

Did exactly that a while ago to salvage the nano texture panel from my 5k iMac. It takes a bit of research to figure out the correct driver board for the specific panel / peripheral combo, but the build process itself was pretty straightforward and it works like a charm.

Can you share any experiences with the driver boards? From what I've seen it looks a bit janky with wires sticking out of the old iMacs chassis and a very old school on screen display. Is the driver board stable? No overheating or signal issues?

I went with the T18 board since it’s passively cooled. IIRC it could also do PD through USB-c, but that would require additional cooling and I just don’t trust noname Chinese manufacturers to do that correctly anyway, so I typically have it hooked up via HDMI. So far it’s been perfectly stable, without any issues. I think there might have been a small addon board to be able to use full brightness as well. There’s a built-in retro display monitoring menu, but I haven’t had a need to use it really, most configurations work from Mac OS, including color profiles and brightness control.

For cables, my iMac had an opening in the back for RAM sticks, which I popped out and wired all cables through. I mounted the driver board on a piece of plexiglass so that most of the ports are accessible directly to the RAM opening. For power, I use a regular third party power brick I had laying around, though some people have reused the iMac’s original power cable with an internal power supply.

Honestly, the hardest parts were identifying the correct driver board and gluing the front glass back on after assembly.

I know. I wish Apple for once did the nice gesture and provide documentation. Whoever is happy with MacOS, uses MacOS, whoever is happy with Linux (or BSD) uses Linux. I guess a great deal of devs/techies would migrate to Macbooks. I don't know if it is corporate greediness or corporate stupidity.

It's the greed. Apple only makes around 8% of revenue through hardware sales of all Macs combined. "Services" (App Store, iCloud, Music, TV+, ect.) make more than 3x more revenue. Then, profit margin on services is again 3x higher than on Mac hardware. So they really want all Mac users also use Services.

If your proposed change increases Mac sales by 1%, but only 0.1% of users install Asahi, they lose money.

I'm still watching out for Asahi progress, amazing project. USB-C displays and the M3 will come (and I don't care to much for the rest), that makes a refurbished macbook air an attractive proposition.

Commodity futures made sense to me at FedEx- they would pay money with a supplier for the option to buy gas/oil at X price at Y date in the future. It costs more than just agreeing to pay for it at that price in the future, but if deliveries went way down (or prices) it'd be less costly to "back out". I wonder if there's a fab time secondary market where Wall Street types are making millions off speculating fab time.

1) Every airline buys futures for oil, this is (one of) the points of the futures market.

2) If there is a market to hedge/speculate, it will exist. Maybe not 'fab futures' but there is definitely one.

I was a fanboy looking for every new update like a present, for 13 years, not anymore. It took one Tahoe burn all that trust. Never upgrading major OS versions on hardware from Apple again.

Sequoia is 15. I still have my M1 Mini on Sonoma 14.5. It keeps nagging me to update to Tahoe. Oh ... I just checked, and I could update to 14.8.4. Maybe that's safe.

Yeah, the 3090 has faster memory, but not by a lot. The 5090 is at 1,792GB/sec and potential M5 Ultra would be 1,230GB/sec and 512GB RAM. Maybe 1TB. Not 32.

You’re suggesting that a difference of the entirety of the M5 Max’s bandwidth is an insignificant gap!
