I completely agree. I've worked on the Whisky project and am fairly familiar with WINE, Proton, and CrossOver. Apple certainly allows a lot of free without in-app purchases apps on the App Store.

They don’t care that much about the 30% (which was the best deal ever for a phone app store when it came out) except how the App Store sells hardware.

But it burns a hole in your lap while doing so probably.

And yet, it allows the user to experience true freedom unlike Apple's offerings.

Most laptops sit on a desk and never see a lap, even Macs.

Benchmarking how long people could sit with a laptop on their lap while running Geekbench could be an interesting metric though.

If they both top out at 60 they are equally fast. One just had better acceleration than the other

Top speed hardly matters for cars. Acceleration is where fun is. Not sure this applies to CPUs at all.

Cornering speed is where real fun is. And danger.

Nice. The iPads generally measure around ~8% slower than the MacBooks, I guess for cooling reasons. So we should see approximately a 4400 single core Geekbench score for the MacBook series. Between personal and home, I've had a:

M1 (16Gb)

M1 Pro (16Gb)

M2 Pro (16Gb)

M3 Pro (32Gb)

M4 Air (24Gb)

Currently switch between the M2 Pro and the M4 Air, and the Air is noticeable snappier in everyday tasks. The 17' M3 Pro is the faster machine, but I prefer not to lug it around all day, so it gets left home and occasionally used by the wife.

Care to elaborate on this? I get that iOS is a closed system but I’ve never felt limited by Apple in what I can do with my Macbook.

It feels like Intel and AMD are asleep at the wheel with their mobile lineup. I've been looking at non-apple equivalents that have similar performance/power as the M lineup and it seems they all lag about 20%+. For $800 the M4 Air just seems like one of the best tech deals around.

Most of it can be explained away with TSMC. If you compared Apple's 5nm parts (M2), with AMD's 4nm parts, you'll see the performance swing in just about the same magnitude but in favor of AMD. M5 is 3rd gen 3nm.

Would this have been with MacOS 7’s Multiprocessing Services? I managed to play with an SMP Mac clone (DayStar Genesis MP), but all I really could do in the end is use some plugins for Photoshop.

Well it's quite different from the M1. Please don't mix it. It like saying i3 and i7 is the same if they are on the same generation.

It's not that different. It has more cores but they're the same cores.
