The performance per watt is only 1.5x so it's too hot.

3588 is waaaay more performant per watt, close to Apples M1.

The IO has been moved outside the SoC which causes alot of issues.

SD Card speeds are enough for client side use.

I do not know the specifics but a large issue with the 5 is that a lot of hardware acceleration for encoding and decoding video was removed, making it slower for anything to do with video.

You can only stream 720p out at 20 FPS from my 2711 though, so it only seems to decode well = watching/consuming media. (the future is producing)

The 2712 can stream out 720p at 40 FPS. (CPU)

The 3588 can stream out 720p at 60+ FPS. (CPU)

Edit: HL2 runs at the "same" FPS on each (sometimes 300+ on 3588)...

When i bought the 3080ti, it really made me to rethink about my setup. I'm using space heater in an Air-conditioned room, wasting more energy for nothing.

JS ~~devs~~ writers keep managing to make their bloatware run slow even on highend hardware. Ryzen 9 7900x + 128GB ram + 6900XT + arch yet Cursor IDE still manages to be incredibly slow and freezing up after re-focusing. Even base VSCodium is many times faster than that. I can have AAA game + kernel build + 100 Firefox tabs active at the same time, yet a piece of JS makes the hardware seem garbage.

Hey, don't call them devs. They are software engineers. They engineer that 8MB javascript page.

As we discussed elsewhere you could put the Ryzen 5 5600 into 45W ECO mode and cool it passively. Or a Ryzen 5 7600 if you decide to jump up to AM5 (which is probably a good idea even though you'll need new RAM).

As I probably replied there too I do not want to build hardware that can burn my house down if the wares are crap and decide to reset for some reason.

I wish developers, and I'm saying this as one myself, were forced to work on a much slower machine, to flush out those who can't write efficient code. Software bloat has already gotten worse by at least an order of magnitude in the past decade.

i work as a mid-level engg with a 4+ yo dell (handed down to me when i joined), which is the same generic laptop that someone from admin team receives. some of my colleagues also share similar specs, and we were yet to be lucky to be given an upgrade.

might be down to the tech culture here, but we don't automatically write the most efficient code either. for a lot of simple projects, these "bad" machines are still capable enough unfortunately.

At my former job at a FAANG, I did the math on allocating developers machines with 16GB vs 64GB based on actual job tasks with estimates of how much thumb twiddling waiting time that this would save and then multiplied that out by the cost of the developer's time. My personal experience using virtual desktops vs a MacBook aligns with your analysis. This despite the desktop virtual machines having better network connections. A VM with 16 GB of memory and 8 VCPUs can't compete with an M1 Max laptop.

5950x is such a great platform. I can’t see replacing mine for several years at least.

The combination of the twin Matisse I/O dies (one on the CPU package, one serving as the X570 chipset), Zen 3 chiplets, and overall maturity of the AM4 platform is still unmatched. I'm waiting for AM5 to "get good" before upgrading my 5950X (even though Zen 4 and Zen 5 chiplets are already quite good). I hope the next gen brings a core count bump, better DDR5 stability at higher speeds in 2DPC configurations, and USB…

ETA: Oh, and PCIe Gen5 between the CPU and south bridge(s).

Threadrippers are workstation processors and support ECC, Epycs are servers and the 9950X is HEDT (high end desktop).

Standard Ryzen chips also support ECC (minus the monolithic G models). I run 2x48GB ECC with my 9800x3d.
