I don't think Republicans need to worry about Dems retaking the Senate anytime soon.

Yeah, we tried to hack this by buying a cheap place in Offaly near the train and working remote, and it was kinda-sorta OK except that our neighbours were hell on Earth. Gave up and moved to the Netherlands which has been great for our kids' independence. I do miss a good snug though.
Aren't Netherlands wages lower than Germany except for US big-tech and HFT? I got a 70k offer with 10 YoE last week from a recruiter to move to NL and it felt like a ripoff. So I don't know where these fancy NL wages are outside the top 1%.

I dunno, I live in NL but work remote for a US company
Generally you want to work for US companies, see the pragmatic engineers trimodal compensation article for details. The US thing works as you're cheap for them (relative to the US) but the wage is better than you can get locally.

I don't think this tells us much. The present distribution of supporters is rather unique in how strongly it correlates with population density, which means that Dems are going to have a major structural handicap in Senate. I don't think there was ever anything similar historically. And it won't change unless and until the coalitions change, which, sure, will happen eventually - but then it'll be a completely differe…
Maybe you're right, but people always say that. And they've always been wrong.
As one plausible mechanism: the economy stalls / inflation accelerates and people blame the party in power.

Sadly, not to adopt such a sane taxation method....
That isn't really possible because American Constitution expressly prohibits it. There is no realistic possibility of modifying the Constitution to allow it either. As far as the US Federal government is concerned it has little practical relevance.

In the 2026 senate election, the Dems could absolutely flip Maine, North Carolina, and two others; maybe Alaska and Ohio.
If Elon Musk makes good on his threat to try to take out sitting GOP senators, that splitting of the vote could mean the Dems pick up a few more as well.

They all seem to be only in Dublin and Amsterdam.

I read, wanted to reply but would only echo what you wrote. 100% agree. Just a note that my 10% experience is based on general population of people who were working remotely for at least 6 months (and being a contractor I’ve switched orgs more often than average engineer)
100% agree with you both and I love the litmus tests mentioned! Looks like big and small tech are mostly doing things wrong then?
What people forget is that making a good remote culture requires both the right people and a ton of intentionality. There are no unplanned interactions in the workplace that cause people to form more than a transactional relationship.

Honestly, this is a not true. If you work with a decent accounting firm like KPMG’s Vancouver practice, and maintain a decent dev task management system like JIRA, you will be fine to hand over your payroll register and a CSV dump every January. A few weeks later, you have your claim. Once in a while, you have to sit there and talk with the CRA’s auditor.
> Honestly, this is a not true You have a conjecture that all companies keep good jira task tracking and payroll, AND that all companies contract out big accounting firms like KPMG. From my personal experience I have been at two Canadian companies who didn’t claim SR&ED and therefore your conjecture is disproven with counter examples. Some companies don’t keep good enough task tracking, some companies don’t know abou…
