A significant part of Africa, Benelux, The Nordics, a huge part of the indian subcontinent, most expats in any country, Canada...

Even if you live in a purely Monoglot country (And those are less common than people think), in absolute numbers it's a lot of people

BlockTube is a must - can block specific channels from showing up, videos with "Journaling" and "changed my life", hide videos watched over 50%, etc. Enhancer for Youtube is also super useful: disable shorts entirely, autoplay next only on playlists, tweak number of videos per row, default playback speed, default theater mode, etc. As another commenter said, Youtube is one of those sites that really requires multiple…

Many people from other parts of the world don't know it exists, so when you say "Irish language", they just think you mean hiberno-english. I've never heard anyone claim it either, just assume, then get confused in conversation until I clarify.

Except both the head of YouTube and literally the CEO of Google are of Indian decent, have lived in India, and as such are almost certainly multilingual. Plus the fact that Google attracts developers from all of the world probably means very many developers at both Google and YouTube are multilingual. They obviously know how the world looks like, and still decided to do this.

I'm Indian. I can use four languages at full proficiency, and am in the middle of picking up two more. I can't explain how confusing and frustrating the past two weeks has been for me on YouTube. But there are people who handle even more languages. I wonder how they're doing emotionally! I'm confused about the planning and logic that goes into decisions like these.

Monolinguals consistently underestimate how hard it is to reach proficiency in another language. The exception to this being being raised in a multilingual home.

I don't know what their reasoning is. They can plainly see around them foreigners struggling to speak, but they somehow think that it won't happen to them?

I only love it when their Mickey Mouse sounding AI voice turns ads into a real clown show. Imagine how they spent big money developing a slogan for their brand or product and then AI comes around with a near literal translation that makes no sense whatsoever and that is what people hear. That is the only positive side, otherwise it is what you wrote. A real pain.

Reminds me of when Amazon came to Sweden and had machine translated product names - including for movies and games.

A friend showed me that the latest game I had worked on was hilariously mistranslated. It's originally "Need For Speed: Payback" but got translated to "behöver du hastighet: återbetalning" which would be more like "do you need speed: reimbursement"

While logged into Google with your own regional settings, try Google Flights in any country- the currency is always set to that country's currency. I have no idea what a flight costing 781,667 blergs is, Google. Is that a lot? If I knew what blergs are worth, I'd set my regional settings to blergs. So you set the currency to your own. Then navigate away, then come back. Now it's blergs again.

Oh how I hate this UX antipattern. Even when you know the price of blerg, the cognitive overhead is real.

This flight is 781,667 blergs but this other one is only 722,458 blergs! Is that a huge cost savings? Better switch tabs and start calculating.

Sure, people just need a way to change the detected language and the possibility to turn off “auto dubbing”.
