#3I don't understand why these idiots aren't laughed out of the room with these childish requests. Looks like this is a "maybe" so hopefully that's happening?

You do not want a U.S. military that isn't willing to subordinate itself to civilian control, even if the civilians are stupid. No matter how terminally online or terminally partisan you are, you absolutely, positively do not want that .

Back in 1945..46 at the time of Nuremberg trials the cases of "just following orders" defense did not work.
That one can be trialed and prosecuted for following orders has been part of the curriculum in military education in many countries in the world.
So you a wrong. You absolutely, positively want that the military chain of command will be laughed out for stupid orders, because in more dramatic circumstances, those following orders may be executed for war crimes even if they were just "following orders".
Here is a case in point about remembering history.
Until end 1970-ies, Soviet state was run by people who witnessed the 1939..1945 wars and while it built a lean and mean military machine, the state was overtly pacifist. Just check online for Soviet propaganda.
Fast-forward to 2010-ies, you will notice a non-negligible amount of the population associating itself with the "we can do it again" slogan. The assumption behind the slogan being that they can beat the Nazis or whoever alien comes to fight them.
The joke is that this "stupid" slogan turned into reality when they whole country turned into a Nazi state. Not exactly the outcome everyone expected that the time, when slapping it on car stickers.
