What alternatives have you found? Do you mostly go to smaller vendors?
not the person you're replying to but one trick I've found to be very effective is to find a product on amazon and then look for the vendor to buy from directly.

Be careful what you wish for. > Have you seen Star Trek? We should have computer by now. An agent which knows when to tell us things we need to know, not just respond to requests. Have you read 1984[0]? Star Trek is fiction. A good fiction IMHO, but a fiction none the…
If you'd read 1984 recently enough you'd know it is based upon the notion of state and social imposed ideology becoming enmeshed, a locally running hub of pure logic is the antithesis of that concept. A better metaphor would be mephi from yamyatin's We (the original inspiration for 1984) which represents the kernel of u modulated truth which exists outside the calculus of the imposed social matrix Hilarious that you…
My reference to 1984 was a juxtaposition used to illuminate the fallacy of:
>> Have you seen Star Trek? We should have computer by now. An agent which knows when to tell us things we need to know, not just respond to requests.
Be that as it may, the probability of a dystopian result is far greater than the utopian one quoted.
> A better metaphor would be ...
Since it was not a metaphor, the remaining critique is moot.

I agree with the principle but frankly it doesn't apply here. Privacy conscious people have been sounding the alarm about these devices since their invention and the overwhelming majority of consumers typically respond to those warnings with dismissal or ridicule. There's only so much sympathy and support and standing up for others that I can fit into any given day and I'd rather give it to people who weren't warned…
You probably overestimate how loud are these "Privacy conscious people". I bet if you ask ordinary Joe about privacy concerns with voice assistant devices, he'd tell he had no clue.
Because Ordinary Joe is willfully ignorant, not because no one was shouting about privacy concerns.

#664Our longstanding privacy commitment with Siri https://www.apple.com/jo/newsroom/2025/01/our-longstanding-p...
All bullshit. Apple loves to make a big stand on privacy but quietly folds just like the rest of them. Remember that big stink they rose over the FBI needing access to an encrypted phone a decade ago? Apple still gave everything the FBI requested some time later after got their PR win

#665If I buy a car and, after a while, the guy who sold me the car comes in the middle of the night and takes the wheels, isn't it theft?
Tesla remotely disable cars when they decide to, as they claim that they sell you the car, but only license the software. You get to keep the car, but loose the license to operate the software needed to actually make it useable.

The framework that exists is crap and should be replaced with something where you as a consumer should not have to watch the eula changes like a hawk, and then the onus should not be on you as a consumer to do extra work to get refunded for a bait and switch.
The legal system is crap and should be replaced? I'm out of this discussion, go do a revolution or keep me out of it.

What’s the alternative? Everyone else has you pay for shipping, and it’s slower.
Everyone has you pay for shipping. Amazon just lies about it, and has contracts that prevent people from selling their wares anywhere else cheaper.

> That it’s actually usable? Great healthcare is pointless if you cannot afford to go to the doctor. And yet Americans seem to survive more often with a healthcare they supposedly do not use than Italians and Frenchmen with a healthcare they use. > Sure, but what standard of high school degree? Surely you aren't implying that the standards of an American HS degree are so low that the education that that huge percenta…

Google Assistant is going away soon so this won't work anymore. https://arstechnica.com/google/2025/03/end-of-life-gemini-wi...
I wonder how that will affect older devices, like Android TV streaming boxes, where you use the assistant through the remote. I see that the article mentions this, but I'm skeptical. I think that the assistant will just be switched off, and that will be it; no more using the older Android TV box to ask for today's weather or search for videos.
So you could probably replace the whole backend while keeping things compatible as long as you maintain that simple API.

Yea - I don't think voice commands are a feature particularly desired for speakers. There are only a few instances I can think of where I want my speaker to respond to voice commands - when I'm in the shower and when I want it to be silent so I can take a call being the primary ones. For the former I think just having a playlist on shuffle is good enough and the for the latter there are better solutions available by…
So what you wanted was a wireless speaker? I think when most people say "smart speaker" they mean a speaker that they can control using the speaker itself, so not just a speaker tethered via bluetooth/wifi.
