You have to realize this app existed in the apple-sphere. The user base is part of a very entitlement based generation for the most part. That's why there's so much rage.

Sparrow isn't Instagram. Most acqui-hires lately have been, essentially, large signing bonuses. Six figures per founder. Not "FU" money.
Well, the number being reported in this particular case is $25 million, split between their 5 person team.

That's exactly why they had to kill it. If you don't use the web app you don't see GMail ads.
Do you really need to see gmail ads, or does it suffice if they can associate your client IP address with your email content and show you suitable ads the next time you visit a site with AdSense / doubleclick?
At their scale, even statistical advantages pay off.

#369I'm also sad that Sparrow won't be developed any more (I use both Mac and iPhone apps).
But if the Sparrow team will have a chance to improve Gmail, then we will all benefit from it. Hopefully, this is the case. Otherwise, it's just annoying.
