Positive expected value, or effective as in "lose slower"? My understanding was that Martingale is (almost?) always negative expected value.
Martingale depends on (a) an infinite bankroll, and (b) being able to place an arbitrarily large bet, neither of which hold in the real world.

Card counting is largely defeated by adding more and more decks to the shuffle. Once you get to a 6-deck shoe, it becomes very difficult to use card counting to successfully "beat the odds".
I kept 4 counts in my head for 8 deck games 1. normal count 2. aces seen 3. face cards seen 4. Card counting is a meaneal mental task you can train yourself at, regardless of how many decks there are. It's more about how fast the cards move on the table and keeping up.

Yes. It is. And if the casino realizes that you're doing it, you'll be banned from the casino. So most people who do this come up with clever ways to continue to do so while being less easy to detect, like having multiple people work together. Poker is easier to win if you know where you can find players that aren't very good at it, but as you pointed out that's getting harder. I've never heard anyone say that about craps, I just read some math that says don't come bar is a more likely win and have come up on that while making the regulars at the table groan at me, but I used to play a lot of street dice when I was a kid haha always fun to bust out at part…
The house edge in craps is nearly even (0-2%) [1] for what I consider non-sucker bets. Don't pass is slightly better than pass, but again, gambling for me is consumption now. If I win great, but I already have a job. The point is to have fun and for me, no other gambling matches the dopa hit when someone is on a hot roll with a whole table cheering and making money. The trick is finding tables where people are completely wasted and showing up sober in my experience
