my friends and I grew up with open source, and it was never about community to us, it was about having source doing what we want with it, and if we felt like giving back maybe we did maybe we didnt. We had no expectation(outside of license) from that open source beyond the code we got, and had no expectations(beyond license) from anyone using our open source code.

what should the bar be? how many "moral codes" does one need to appease just to use some software especially when that software's license allowed it
