(Edit: Looks like the articles from Jacobin and New Statesman have been taken down.) From the other thread: https://jacobin.com/2024/06/noam-chomsky-obituary-media-theo... https://www.newstatesman.com/ideas/2024/06/the-noam-chomsky-... https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=40720876

None of them seem to be referencing any sources other than themselves, the Twittersphere, or each other. Nor would I describe Jacobin or The New Statesman as reliable.

He literally wrote articles for both of them. If you don't believe them, why do you care at all if it's true or not?

Obituary from Yanis Varoufakis: https://www.newstatesman.com/ideas/2024/06/the-noam-chomsky-...

Anything that comes out of that person should be taken with a shovel of salt.

I did the rounds a few mins ago, and there is nothing on BBC, CNN, France24, DW.

For all we know he has passed. I will believe it when I see it in these (or some other credible site), not a joke's twitter/X account.

Typically media orgs have obituaries made for everyone likely to pass (sick, or old age). It would make sense that all media orgs got one handy for Noam as his is rather old.

Let's wait and see.

Those publications are good for after-the-fact in-depth analyses, but they're not really equipped to produce/verify breaking news. It's very unlikely they would hear about something like this before AP, Reuters, etc.

As far as I can tell, neither article has basic facts about his death, either, such as where he died or how.

Is Varoufakis not trustworthy?
