#2Note that this region is about 30,000 light years away, so in the astronomically (heh) unlikely chance that it's artificial, the timing is still wrong for it to be in response to any human activity.

If you're already assuming it's "artificial", how could it not be?
Well, unless there's a Stargate buried under Cheyenne mountain and someone dialed an interstellar path that went through a chance solar flare, dumping intrepid adventurers somewhere 30k light-years away and >30k years in the past... Or unless it's the secret ancestral home of the proto-human Pak, etc.
