Information from the business itself is more reliable than information from a third party website. It is also more useful to the business’s existing employees. Also, the third party website can use the information from official job listings to provide the most accurate and sourced data.
If levels.fyi used info from job listings, it would end up completely useless like the pay ranges companies post. The whole reason it works, is because it does not use “official data.”

The former information is credible and useful for looking at long term supply and demand trends.
The latter information is useful for negotiating individual compensation.
