My question for someone in the UK is whether you could file a defamation complaint or suit against the entities reporting you as being a debtor given it’s clearly got significant impact and cost and stigma and clearly they’re not doing basic verification and their response is prove they’re wrong not the other way round.

The fact that the debt isn’t linked to a person by name is absolutely wild. The fact that they assign it to someone based on residency is IMO absolutely bonkers, and downright mentally defective. It sounds so ripe for rampant abuse it’s ridiculous.
