Also I wanted to say something else about Ian, the other 'bad' commenter that was dead flagged. Ian is unfortunately previously associated with YC and I consider it not a good look for someone like that to jump onto a YC property / Show HN and make really negative comments. Especially considering that YC people are often involved in reviewing YC applications and it seems he could have been involved in reviewing some of our previous applications. Which makes his lies about "shady" behavior all the more egregious! A perversion of truth and possibly a violation of personal information. I think that's possibly where he begun his fixation. But clearly the only person displaying shady behavior here, is Ian! What could he possibly be talking about? -- besides his own projections?
Because I've changed my username on HN? So? My previous account, which I linked to when I first created this current one is totally fine. But I'm not going to be coerced into linking to just because someone makes some shady false allegations, but it's easy to find. But the reason I left that? Because I'd accrued more than 10,000+ karma in under 3 years. And I just thought, "This is too easy. I want to start fresh". So I did. Ian sees a problem with that, he's just projecting some negative from his own mind. I mean, I get if he would be doing something "shady" in that situation himself - I'm certainly not. So all I can say to him is: Ian, you find there what you bring to it. I get you feel that way about me and my work and my company, and my products, but that's not how it is. Sorry to say, man. You're deluded.
When he says "Thanks for letting me form opinions" I'm like what? I'm saying my opinion, truth of what happened in push back to his? Why would he say that? He really expects us to be silent when he makes all those phony allegations and insinuations? He wants a silent compliant victim? Fuck that. I am gonna stand up. For myself, my product and my company. Simple.
But it's very abusive and only reflective of his personality for him to come here and be so negative, and lying. To be clear I never "gave him permission" to form opinions. How ridiculous! It speaks to him framing it as if we're somehow trying to "control" this but he's trying to control the discussion with his abusive crazy insinuations on our positive Show HN post. Frankly, I do not care what insane opinions he forms, I don't even hope they're informed, I don't expect that in his case. I just don't want him misleading other people. That's why I replied. I definitely don't need to defend myself from his craziness, I only replied to him because other people might have been misled by his lies and I choose to bring clarity to that. And stand up for myself.
I mean, if he really was just "wanting to know" or "wanting to help" and had been watching us for years as he said (fucking creepy tho), why not just send me an email? If he really had concerns, why not do that rather than trying to humiliate us here, on the moment we are showing our work? It seems very clearly, he's not trying to be nice or helpful, he's just trying to hurt us. Doesn't he have any empathy with how I'd feel with that kind of comment and insinuations? How we'd all feel?
Doesn't he have any respect for the kind of hard work it takes to create something like this? And he just comes on with this crazy insinuations, that was the first comment on our Show, at it's peak while on the front page, trying to tarnish our reputation? Completely baselessly and without any evidence. Like standing up in front of a massive audience to say some crazy shit about the person taking center stage. It's jealous, and it's hurtful. Doesn't he care? So that's the kind of abuse we're dealing with here with him.
Well he didn't succeed at tarnishing our reputation. We accrued more than 11000 users on the web desktop since launching this. And over 350 new signups and even some subscribers to what's basically a new version demo.
But the question remains why is he interested in hurting us? Viewing his blog shows nothing to suggest his fixation with us or BrowserBox/CloudTabs/DOSYAGO DOSAYGO. Tho as his blog posts about hacking his neighbors shows he displays a certain nefarious lack of respect of other people's boundaries.
Anyway, I conclude that he must simply have personal connections to some competitors who intended to use our work when under a permissive license and became furious when we restricted it to noncommercial use with commercial licenses purchasable (at https://dosyago.com or by reaching out to sales@dosyago.com :)). And he was simply expressing their frustration in an abusive manner by proxy, by trying to ruin our reputation by concern trolling our Show HN and baselessly suggesting impropriety. Alternately, I suppose it's more interesting to consider that he's done something bad afoul of the law, but his connections have landed him reprieve in exchange for being compromised and he's running this little op at the behest of his handler. It sounds bizarre, but as we're in the cybersecurity space we get approaches all the time from people not who they say they are.
Anyway, hopefully his bizarre, deranged "ALL CAPS" response above to my calm and friendly (super generous) response to his initial comment should convince anyone who cares to look that we don't need to take him seriously. But questions still remain around his unhinged obsession with our product and abusive, gratuitous negativity towards that and me, bizarrely! I've never interacted with him before this, so it's just totally fucking weird. I'm adding this comment now because it's good to have a record against crazy people like this.
I suspect he's the type to get obsessed and stalkery and pursue this more in future, so this is us putting the foot down. I feel it's kind of humorous tho, how far he's fallen from being a YC alum. And while it doesn't look good for YC to have this association with his shady character and behavior, I don't hold them responsible. It doesn't matter. They can't control his behavior. So we need to say something that's all.
Hopefully he reforms himself and behaves better next time, and stops being abusive on people's products, when they're supposed to be celebrating them. Or at least constructively criticizing them, not offering weird, unhappy, unhinged, personal vindictive commentary that seems to come from some kind of strange vendetta. Most likely just come from his jealousy! Fix yourself instead of blaming others, bud! Anyway, hopefully that clears up all his craziness and puts a stop to it.
If not, we might have to consider some other steps. Tho we probably don't have to worry, tho it is really annoying and I don't like bad behavior from people. Especially the type leveled by someone who abuses their intellect to try to hurt others, and deceptively sheaths their cruelty in a few nice sounding words and pretense of goodness. Oh well, the world is full of bad people, can't do anything about that.
I guess the best way to stop to this is just to say: Why do we work on this product? We love the work. Different of our staff love different things. I personally enjoy technical challenges, the satisfaction of resolving problems, and building something, crafting it. And I think this space is cool. Tho personally I am definitely enjoying having to program less now. For others, they think it's a cool place to work and that we have great customers. Plus it makes a huge amount of money for relatively little outlay, so we wouldn't we work on it? Hahahah!
It’s he tries to frame it that there’s “recurring themes” that are “amiss” in our product: there’s nothing that’s amiss, and there’s nothing that’s recurring about that because it doesn’t exist. People love our product. We’re building something that we think is cool, and our customers love it, and that’s awesome. It’s very ironic and telling and reflective of Ian that he brings up “likable” (and tries to frame our product as needing to be more likable, insinuating somehow we haven’t had success or done well enough): I think the only unlikeable thing is his comment here, and his attitude in general. Also, he’s probably just bitter. Check out his GitHub, mine has 6000 more stars than his. Hahaha! And he’s complaining about “likable” he’s just projecting, ridiculously obviously. The only thing that needs to be more likable and more successful is what he works on! It’s crazy that some people totally take what they think of themselves and then just project it on someone else because they’re too afraid to face that about themselves. It’s so abusive tho. I do not tolerate that kind of behavior. Our product is so much more likeable than anything he’s created. It’s so telling of him that he tries to frame it otherwise; yeah, he needs to believe it’s that way, for his own sanity. I think we can go further: we are so much more likeable than Ian. I am so much more likeable than Ian.
But this is not a popularity contest. It’s about integrity, honesty and building something that people want. And that’s what we’ve done. He’s just bitter. And I feel for him, I really do. I feel very sad for him, it’s terrible. I’m sure he’s going through something hard. But I can’t let that compassion and empathy for someone damaged and hurting allow me to tolerate their bad behavior. Especially unanswered. I choose to answer it, and stand up for myself, my company and the people who work with us, and work for us. They don’t deserve his abuse, none of us do. I don’t deserve it.
And I hate to see this slickly created insinuations masking itself as something reasonable, when it’s not. But ultimately that is just a reflection of his personality. Slick, deceptive, but ultimately corrupt. That’s his product. Fuck yeah! :) hahaha :)
I am not going to tolerate bullshit from people like that. I don't have a tolerance for bad, malicious behavior either from customers (who we curate and vet, only working with those we approve of), strangers or anyone else. And so I'm standing up to this, here with this pushback message. I just hope Ian feels like he can finally satisfy his father and come up to his level, so he stops taking out his emotions on other people's work, just projecting his own insecurities.
