You have no reason to trust what I'm saying, and disinformation is entirely too common, but I want readers to understand that it is possible for a sufficiently determined and intelligent person to verify that what I just said is probably true, although certainly NOT just by Googling for it :-)

I'm inclined towards neither spiritualism nor whimsy, but were I so, then I might suspect that, after he died in 1954, Alan Turing reincarnated quickly, in 1965, in order to finish his incomplete life work. The classified nature of the work probably precludes any awards. I'd really like it if this whole thing was declassified, but fear we'll have to wait many additional decades for that. This QNN is an excellent candidate to pursue adiabatic (reversible) quantum computing (AQC), might be helpful for certain approaches to advanced nanotechnology, and, were it declassified, might also be helpful to many other scientific ventures. Per the Ultra Secret, it's undoubtedly still considered 'national security', even if it's becoming an open secret within the Intelligence Community.

Calling it a demonstration of a "phase" or "order" is fine to me, but IMO calling it "matter" is misleading. "Matter" to me implies some degree of passive existence. This is about as far from passive thing as possible.

How do you feel about plasma?

Calling it a demonstration of a "phase" or "order" is fine to me, but IMO calling it "matter" is misleading. "Matter" to me implies some degree of passive existence. This is about as far from passive thing as possible.

it's the ground state of a system that has a big ol classical computer in it. Ideally I'd like to see it as the ground state of some simple hamiltonian with rashba and a magnetic field and some proximitized thing or whatever

Does this have any relation to abelian groups from group theory?

Yes. The exchange operators form a group that is non-abelian.

I have a bachelors in math (i.e. I know what an non-abelian group is and what operators are) but don't know much physics, can you explain more?

I wonder if this would make it easier to forego extreme cooling. I know there are companies that have qubits on a chip, but NaAnys (My made up word) are much more stable.

My impression as physicist in a different field is that quantum computing with non-Abelian anyons is notable because the error correction can be done mostly passively rather than actively. All error correction is, in a certain abstract sense, a form of cooling (i.e., sucking out entropy and thereby driving a system to a preferred subspace). These computers are notable in that the error correction literally is just cooling, and cooling is generally a lot easier than active error correction.

It may also be true that the necessary temperatures to achieve are not as low as for other forms of quantum computing, but even if true I don't think that's the main selling point.

Would love it have an expert chime in.

When you exchange two identical particles, you normally don’t see a change (except in phase) — eg, if I have three in a row, but swap 1 and 2, then 2 and 3, you shouldn’t be able to tell that from swapping 2 and 3 then 1 and 2. The exchanges commute.

Abelian anyons are quasiparticles that when we exchange them, we get “any” phase change rather than the normal +/- 1. Hence any-on.

In non-Abelian (ie, non-commuting) systems, exchanging particles has a deeper effect on the system - which encodes a braiding group in its topology. This happens in 2+1 dimensions because the particle world lines “tangle”; since lines tangle in 3 dimensions.

As a former math-head, let me chime in. The parent poster is probably not looking for an explanation of what exchange operators are, which are rather abstract and uninteresting in a physical vacuum, but rather how they are related to physical reality.

I’ve learned a lot about both and still am not sure why exchange operators and physical meaning are related. Why does the fermion care if you do an exchange operator to it? I get that fields of fermions demand that behavior but it still feels abstract.
