#72Syncthing checks all 4 of the boxes: 1) No account needed 2) Easy to use for non-technical people: just copy files into shared folders (like Dropbox) 3) Works the same way across platforms 4) It is distributed, you can share a folder with local devices only
As a Syncthing fan and user I'd say setting it up is non-trivial for a non-techie. Not hard, just not easy either. Once it works it works like a beautiful charm though!

Not necessary anymore, you can message yourself in WhatsApp now. They even sent me a notification in that regard. (That is recent though and I wish I'd known that (clever) workaround before this was possible)

#74Warpinator in Linux Mint works nice in this regard. Works in local networks, discovers it's peers and has mobile clients.

#75Needed copying a pdf file from iPhone to PC. That was absolutely impossible! Tried USB, WiFi and Bluetooth. None of the built in apps or sharing services allowed copying the file over.

#76It's insane to me that this is a frustration I've had back maybe 20 years now and I still feel like there isn't a particularly great solution. My current iteration is just a "transfer" SyncThing folder that is on all my devices. It's not clean or convenient but at least its incredibly fast.
I hate how it's gotten progressively harder as the big platforms effectively declared war on local files. Tools like ES File Explorer and WinSCP used to work great, once upon a time.

If only we had something like AirDrop that reliably worked cross-platform. Proximity-based sharing just makes significantly more sense than uploading files to some server miles away, then immediately redownloading them back when the computer was two feet away from you the whole time.

Windows, Linux, Android, iOS and macOS. Seems quite cross-platform. Can confirm it works smoothly for Linux and Android at the very least.

Pairdrop was posted on HN a little while back and I setup an instance on my home network. Doesn't work everywhere obviously but it does seem to effectively solve this problem within my household.

It would be nice if Syncthing supported the concept of moving files though - i.e. that it should seed a file to other peers and once it hits the target seeding level, delete it locally.
