I'm not just asking about reading HN, but also posting, commenting etc.
Is having an alternative UI even allowed by HN? I mean both technically (e.g. cross-origin, authentication) but also officially?

I mostly use curl, much easier than such a painful app like a browser
Though as my printer was made in Sweden, it sometimes just prints a page saying "Sorry." with a 403 header as HN sometimes blocks privacy focused people.

How about Modern for Hacker News: https://www.modernhn.com/ - available for both Gecko and Chromium-based browsers. There's also a Wikipedia version: https://www.modernwiki.app/ - tho now it just slightly redefines already modernized interface that was released months ago
I personally just use Stylus and have a custom css for making things a bit more readable and user friendly.

I was thinking something similar to alternative frontends for youtube which already exit.
