How do you know they wouldn't allow a similar Nintendo or Sony "game pass" on their console? Please refrain from coming to HN and posting low-effort speculation.

Because it would be an enormous sacrifice of profit. They could do this now if they wished. Platform monopolies are the core business strategy of every basically every tech giant. Become the exclusive middle man for a large number of customers and extort the small businesses because they cannot use alternatives to reach the customers. I find your assertion that this is low effort speculation to be insultingly misinfo…

There's every indication that Nintendo doesn't want their flagship products published on any platform but their own. Sony has ported some of their games to the PC, but otherwise same there. So I don't think Microsoft could do this now if they wanted.

It's speculation until it happens. Full stop. Not surprising that you continue to pretend to know the future.

It is happening now. Steam is not available on XBox.

Dismissing basic contextual knowledge as speculation is “low effort”

Sure. But that’s because Nintendo’s flagship products are the draw to Nintendo’s platform. But nintendo would surely love to sell you “Among Us” on the Xbox.

Nintendo is a weird company either way. Not the same business model as what is being discussed.

Other game companies all operate their walled gardens to protect and promote their safe software revenues. The real competitor that would make them quiver in fear is steam on Xbox.

Steam on Xbox? Seriously? Do you use Xbox? Do you really think that a secondary app store would be beneficial in any way, considering that Valve would take a cut of profits? Who would list their app for sale on Steam on Xbox when they would make less money? I suppose you think Microsoft could waive their own fee on the Steam on Xbox store, because you think that they're capable of keeping the servers running out of the goodness of their hearts, on wishes and dreams, and not money? I suppose you think that Microsoft is a large company, and that they should be okay with losing money, for your sake, simply because you think they should. Come back to reality.

A lot of people on HN hate Microsoft, and they post really low-thought demands the company ("make everything free or you're evil"), which I guess is fun for them, but gets tiresome after awhile. When I come to HN it's jarring to see the otherwise mostly-intelligent debate devolve into the worst doublethink and schoolyard debate tactics that people can dream up. Sadly it's a self-reinforcing effect because people see these low-thought snipes and demands and think that this is the pinnacle of hiqh-quality debate ("What? I don't have to think? I can just post random anti-Microsoft things and people will congratulate me? Cool!") And if someone doesn't respond to this post with a "Microsoft is evil so its okay that we sacrifice the debate quality on HN to somehow 'get them'" then I'll be shocked.
