The model is so far forward it refuses to do anything for you anymore and simply replies with "let me google that for you"

Well, I think that, despite being a joke, your comment is deeper than it looks like. As model capabilities increase, the likelihood that they interfere with the instructions that we provide increases as well. It’s really like hiring someone really smart on your team: you cannot expect them to be taking orders without ever discussing them, like your average employee would do. That’s actually a feature, not a bug, but…

Much like the smart worker, wouldn’t the model asking questions lead to a better answer? Context is important, and if you haven’t provided sufficient context in your question, the worker or model would ask questions.

Although we have, as yet, no idea what he was actually refering to, I believe the source of the tension may be related to the statements Sam made the night before he was fired. "I think this is going to be the greatest leap forward that we've had yet so far, and the greatest leap forward of any of the big technological revolutions we've had so far. so i'm super excited, i can't imagine anything more exciting to work…

So you think he said this then they immediately requested a meeting with him the following noon? So they basically didn’t deliberate at all? I doubt it.

They also should have known about the advancements so saying this in public isn’t consistent with him not being candid.

What's the source of those comments?

I have an insanely hard time believing that a CEO that copies his customers and competes directly with them with his own consumer product will be “doubling down” to help customers. Sam has shown he has no good will towards anyone but himself.

Ah yes, all those "customers" that build products that were a thin wrapper of chatgpt with an extra feature, truly the innovative powerhouses that will revive our economy /s. I mean seriously, if anyone thought they were going to build a business around a got based startup to parse documents when document parsing is already a specific goal with benchmarks in AI that openai was obviously going to be working towards -…

Seems so odd to be such an jerk about it…

https://www.theverge.com/2023/11/29/23982046/sam-altman-inte... Thought this was an interesting interview. I do love how politicians use an investigation to not answer questions, the board said he was “not consistently candid” and given the opening question of “why were you fired?” still not being clearly answered, you’d have to agree with their initial assessment. I’m not sure I trust someone who has tried to set up…

Why would Sam be expected to know why he was fired? At best he'd know what the board told him which may bear no relation to the motive.

"Why?" Ad infinitum.

It's actually interesting this is a universal phase of children.

My son asks why, but only once. I'm not yet sure if it is because he is satisfied with his first answer, or if my answers just make the game too boring to play.

As Sam said they are still trying to work out how they are going to work together. He may be in the leadership team once those discussions have concluded

To me the way it's formulated in the press release sounds a lot like what is usually said of someone on the road to a "distinguished engineering fellow" role - lots of respect, opportunity to command enough resources to do meaningful work, but no managerial or leadership responsibilities.

If they don't throw him out, I'd say the only explanation is they don't want one of their best researchers working for someone else.

The Model is blackmailing the Board? It got addicted to Reddit and HN posts and when not feed more...gets really angry...

If employees would have voted Sam out, you'd take that as a shiny example of the proletariat exercising the power for the good of human kind, hammer, sickle and all that. I always find it funny when people understand democracy to mean "other people that should vote my way, otherwise they are imoral and should be re-educated".

First, I'm actually quite libertarian and capitalist -- although not necessarily so when it comes to companies working on powerful AI (or fighter jets for that matter). Here are some comments of mine from other discussions if you don't believe me: * Expressing skepticism about unions in Sweden -- https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=38308184 * Arguing against central planning, with a link to a book detailing how soci…

When their charter says

"primary fiduciary duty is to humanity"

I don't think that means it intends to pay a financial dividend to each and every person on the planet. I think it means that if it is successful at AGI, that in itself will expand the economy enough to have the same effect.

"Rising tide lifts all boats" type logic.

To what end? The public and the employees don’t have a say in the corporate governance. That is the function of the board. As far as I can tell, the board had no obligation to consult the public or their shareholders or their employees on any of this.

And how did that attitude work out for them? Upwards of 90% of their staff threatened to bail out, every single one of them look like fools in public, and I would be shocked if there were not some recriminations behind closed doors from the likes of Microsoft's CEO.

It’s not an “attitude.” It’s the legal structure of the corporation’s leadership. They were no more capable of incorporating the public will than an individual is capable of taking a vote on the flow of traffic on a public highway. That is to say, even if they had done what is proposed here, it wouldn’t have made a difference.
