For serious work, you don't have a choice though, the competition isn't there

I depends on what we mean when we say “serious work” but from an European enterprise perspective you would not use OpenAI for “serious work”, you would use Microsoft products. Co-pilot is already much more refined in terms of business value than the various OpenAI products. If you’ve never worked in a massive organisation you probably wouldn’t believe the amount of efficiency it’s added to meetings by being able to m…

How exactly - transcribe text to speech and then convert speech to a summary?

The combined will of the employees is much less meaningful when they're saying "DO IT OR WE'LL TAKE AN ATTRACTIVE OFFER THAT'S ON THE TABLE." I'd have been more impressed by their unity if it would have meant actually losing their jobs.

They were about to quit... how much more should they lose their jobs to impress you?

They were about to quit *to work for Microsoft.

It's a non-profit. It should have no value aside from the mission. The only reason the employees mobilized in their whining and support of a person, whose only skills seems to be raising money and cult of personality, seems to be so that Altman can complete the Trojan horse of the non-profit by getting rid of it now that it has completed the side quest of attracting investors and customers.

> value aside from the mission. And you believe they could’ve achieved their mission with almost zero employees and presumably the board (well… who else?) having to do all the work themselves? > non-profit by getting rid of it So the solution of the board was to get rid of both the non-profit and for profit parts of the company?

> And you believe they could’ve achieved their mission with almost zero employees ...

It's not like they wouldn't be able to hire new employees. ;)

They were about to laterally transfer to a new organization headed by the CEO they revered, with promises of no lost compensation. The only change would be the work address. Hardly a sacrifice sanctifying a principled position.

Whenever I am confronted with the extreme passion behind Sam Altman's leadership, I often wonder if they are just deliberately ignoring the whole Worldcoin thing... everyone does realize it's the same guy, right? Another, um, "non-profit" that is trying to establish a privately controlled global world cryptocurrency and identity in order to, if I'm reading this right, biometrically distinguish us from the AGI he's tr…

I agree, I don't think if this is well intentioned. On the other hand, I don't think worldcoin will ever amount to anything and at most they'd be hacked at some point for the biometrics.

Yeah, absolutely. No arguments. But whether you think this is a potential bond villain dystopian nightmare or just a totally misguided flop -- I mean, I really think that the Altman fans must believe there are two different Altmans.

I mean guys -- his name is SAME ALTMAN

As if they couldn't easily get a job almost anywhere? Also don't they all have equity in OpenAI? Seems like a pretty shallow take.

> Also don't they all have equity in OpenAI? Call me a cynic but this must be the reason behind those 700 employees threatening to walk away, especially if as it seems the board wanted to “slow down”. I don’t think it’s so much of a “we love Altman” as “we love any CEO that will increase the value of our equity”.

People go to work to make money. If they’re lucky, they also like they’re work. It’s ok to want more out of work. Work certainly wants more out of you.

Who is driving the company (companies)? Certainly not the board, when it can be ousted on the whim of one person. Might as well just get rid of the board (all boards in this organization) as any decision made can be overthrown by a bit of publicity and ego. Perhaps it about getting rich at the expense of any ethics? Those who work for this company should bear this in mind, they are all expendable!

The reason the CEO could oust the board like that was that after the board fired the CEO, 720 of the 770 employees of the company got together and signed a pledge that they will all leave unless the CEO is reinstated and the board fired. This was the purest example of labor democracy and self-organization in action in the United States I have ever seen, my takeaway is rather the opposite of "they are all expendable".…

Yeah, unionizing so your boss doesn’t get fired really is the most SF/US “labor democracy” thing ever

So what is Nathan Labenz saying? That GPT-4 is dangerous somehow? It will get many people out of jobs? MS Office got all the typists out of jobs. OCR and Medical Software got all the medical transcriptionists out of jobs. And they created a lot more jobs in the process. GPT-4 is a very powerful tool. It has not a whiff of AGI in it. The whole AGI "scare" seems to be extremely political.

Nathan says the initial version of GPT-4 he red-teamed was "totally amoral" and it was happy to plan assassinations for him: https://nitter.net/labenz/status/1727327464328954121#m Reducing the cost of medical transcription to ~$0 is one thing. Reducing the cost of assassination to ~$0 is quite another.

> Reducing the cost of assassination to ~$0 is quite another.

It is reducing the cost of developing an assassination plan from ~$0 to ~$0. The cost of actually executing the plan itself is not affected.

If that’s the overriding drive then perhaps they should not got to a non-profit and expect it to optimize for profit

And if they walk across that street, I'll cancel my subscription on this side of the street, and start a subscription on that side of the street. Assuming everything else is about equal, such as subscription cost and technology competency. Seems like a simple maneuver, what's the hang up? The average person is just using ChatGPT in a browser window asking it questions. It seems like it would be fairly simple, if ever…

Not that easy, MS can sell the service of GPT but don't own it. No OpenAI no GPT.

I was going on the assumption that MS would not have still been eager to hire them on if MS wasn't confident they could get their hands on exactly that.
