Why do you say "non-technical" ? That's clearly wrong. Just because someone is no longer hands on keys, doesn't make them non-technical. Are larry and sergey non-technical? The collison brothers? None of them are hands on keys anymore. The answer to the question is - even people who don't like him realize he's a smart guy and this was a dumb move, and it was done in an amateurish way by a board out of their depth.
No longer? Sam has never substantially dealt with the underlying code for OpenAI, compared to say Demis Hassabis. He resembles Brian Chesky & Joe Gebbia more than Nathan Blecharczyk.
Changing companies doesn't mean they go from a "former engineer" to a "never was engineer".

That number is 91 employees out OAI's 700. Seems like a pretty reasonable number of people to support Sam's faction, but absolutely recoverable for OAI even if every single heart leaves.
91 declared out of 700. Which is actually surprisingly high and which, given that these people are actively speaking out against their employer indicates that that faction is probably a lot larger than those 91, but those may have good reasons to play it safe for now rather than to risk backing the losing side.
You were right, it's much higher, nearly every employee now. I don't see a viable path forward for the Board at this point.

GPT-4 is an existential threat to Google. Since March 24 of this year, 80% of the time I ask GPT-4 questions I would google before. And Google knows this. They are throwing billions at it but simply cannot catch up.
From a users POV, GPT-4 with search might be, but not alone. There's still a need for live results and citing specific documents. Search doesn't have to mean Google, but it can mean Google. From an indexing/crawling POV, the content generated by LLMs might (and IMO will) permanently defeat spam filters, which would in turn cause Google (and everyone else) to permanently lose the war against spam SEO. LLMs might already be good enough to degrade the benefit of freedom of speech via signal-to-noise ratio
Soon (1-2 years) LLMs will be good enough to improve the general SNR of the web. In fact I think GPT-4 might already be.

I think they'd only be able to improve the SNR if they know how to separate fact from fiction. While I would love to believe they can do that in 1-2 years, I don't see any happy path for that.
