So any bets on who will play Sam on the Netflix movie/miniseries? :)

That does not sound like the proper way to do an openAI 2.0. If Reddit ever hears that's how an AI company scraped them, they'll get sued for fun and profits.
you're aware openai trained on a boatload of pirated ebooks? they "steal" access to data because the LLM launders it on the other end
Llms know the contents of books because they are analyzed, reviewed and spoken about everywhere. Pick some obscure book that doesn't show up on any social media and ask about it's contents. GPT won't have a clue

The board were literally doing their job. Anyone claiming incompetence is just mistaken about the stated goal of openai: safe available agi for all. Throw in a huge investment, a 90 billion dollar valuation and a rockstar ceo. It’s pretty clear the court of public opinion is wrong about this case.
That's not their stated goal, you're misinterpreting it by changing the wording.
Can you fill me in as to what the goal of OpenAI is?

>Ego I can absolutely empathize with Ilya here, though. As far as I know the tech making openai function is largely his life’s work. It would be extremely frustrating to have Sam be the face of it, and be given the credit for it. Sam is clearly a very accomplished businessman and networker. Those people are super important, I wish I had a person like him on my team. I’ve had the experience of other people tacitly tak…
I think Sam has been given credit for being a good CEO and leader, which clearly is deserved. I've never heard him take credit for technical accomplishments. Ilya has been doing plenty of talks, podcasts, etc.--if anyone's the technical face of OpenAI, it's him. There's no lack of praise or credit given to him. "Just speculating on how it might feel to Ilya watching Sam go on a world tour meeting heads of state to ta…

Yes, you are only one data point. Check the views on Ilya's interviews on youtube. E.g. his interview on Lex (which he did years before Sam Altman) has 400k views, which demonstrated that he is a very well known entity in tech/AI space.
Lex has over 3M subs and most of his videos get way over 400k views. I think this makes the opposite point you’re trying to use it for. Sama also went on Lex and got over 5M views. The title was: OpenAi ceo on, ChatGPT, GPT4, and the future of AI.
So yeah, Ilya is a very known entity. No, ordinary folks don't need to know him, but if you are in IT and especially if you have anything to do with AI, then not knowing about Ilya tells more about your informational bubble than about Ilya's alleged lack of recognition.
It is akin to claiming to be into crypto on development side and not knowing the name of Vitalik Buterin.

The point is that the data is easily accessible. If you wanted to get your hands on the data while simultaneously keeping them clean, contract with a Russian contracting company to give you a data dump. You don't need to know how they got it.

#467Does the story of Sam raising funds from Saudi investors to start a AI Chip company have any relevance to what happened or is that just a nothing-burger? I don't any people on HN discussing it today
Is that related to GlobalFoundries?

I don't think getting training data is that hard still, the biggest platforms that locked down their APIs still use them for their mobile apps and can easily be reverse engineered to find keys or undocumented endpoints (or in the case of reddit, an entirely different internal API with less limits and a lot more info leaks...)
Can you explain the reddit one?

Assuming the Reddit app does not use certificate pinning, you can use your computer to provide internet to your phone and then use an app like Charles Proxy to inspect requests being made from an app. Pretty easy to reverse engineer the API. If the app does use certificate pinning, then you can use an Android phone and a modified app that removes the logic that enforces certificate pinning. This is more involved but…
