From NYT article [1] and Greg's tweet [2] "In a post to X Friday evening, Mr. Brockman said that he and Mr. Altman had no warning of the board’s decision. “Sam and I are shocked and saddened by what the board did today,” he wrote. “We too are still trying to figure out exactly what happened.” Mr. Altman was asked to join a video meeting with the board at noon on Friday and was immediately fired, according to Mr. Broc…

So they didn't even give Altman a chance to defend himself for supposedly lying (inconsistent candour as they put it.) Wow.

1723 comments are a lot to get through. I just made a SmartChat of them for anyone who wants to ask for a summary. Anyone can chat with it here: https://go.storytell.ai/sam-altman-hn-comments-smartchat I just tried "Write a summary of the content, followed by a list in bullet format of the most interesting points. Bold the bullet points, followed by a 100-character summary of each." Here's the output: https://s.drod.…

Thank you, this was very helpful. I was beginning to feel overwhelmed by the volume of information and opinions.

- Cant be a personal scandal, press release would be worded much more differently - Board is mostly independent and those independent dont have equity - They talk about not being candid - this is legalese for “lying” The only major thing that could warrant something like this is Sam going behind the boards back to make a decision (or make progress on a decision) that is misaligned with the Charter. Thats the only fir…

It is a personal scandal and I thought it was obvious from the press release. Prior to the Reddit comments, I thought this might be the case, but perhaps I was somehow influenced. Actually, I thought it would be something inappropriate in the workplace. His sister says he molested her when he was a teenager. The way these things break, I’m not surprised it went down that way. Here’s what I thought reading the release…

The sister has been making these accusations for months and nothing happened. What changed today?

This should be higher voted. Seems like an internal power struggle between the more academic types and the commercial minded sides of OpenAI. I bet Sam goes and founds a company to take on OpenAI…and wins.

I don't see it. Altman does not seem hacker-minded and likely will end up with an inferior product. This might be what led to this struggle. Sam is more about fundraising and getting the word out there but he should keep out of product decisions.

Kara Swisher: a “misalignment” of the profit versus nonprofit adherents at the company https://twitter.com/karaswisher/status/1725678074333635028 She also says that there will be many more top employees leaving.

Sutskever: "You can call it (a coup), and I can understand why you chose this word, but I disagree with this. This was the board doing its duty to the mission of the nonprofit, which is to make sure that OpenAI builds AGI that benefits all of humanity." Scoop: theinformation.com https://twitter.com/GaryMarcus/status/1725707548106580255

The moment they lobotomized their flagship AI chatbot into a particular set of political positions the "benefits of all humanity" were out the window.
