Well, that'd put you at odds with state leadership in CA who see their current situation in a much more sober light. Going from unchecked projected growth to projected stagnation in a 3 year span isn't something I've experienced in other parts of the country in my lifetime, so I'm glad you're ready for it. FWIW, I currently live in a "high crime" east coast city -- the kind Californians hold up as a boogeyman versus…

If you had bothered to read any of my prior posts you'd see that I don't live in CA or SF, so this weird sort of projection you're doing where you're acting like I'm some stereotypical Californian isn't exactly doing you any favors.

> I've seen these same carbon copy posts in about every city I've lived in across the US. Usually from people that live outside of the city or have never gone into it.

This is what I'm responding to. I don't see anything I said which implies anything. I don't see anything in this thread of discussion which I have erroneously responded to. You're making broad statements about CA in this thread and stating its just like all the places you have been. Knowing you don't have firsthand experience in this area explains why your posts have seemed so, frankly, ignorant. For those that have lived there recently and have lived other places, we are patiently telling you it is different.

Not just SF: "Target says it will close nine stores in major cities across four states because of theft and organized crime" * https://www.cnn.com/2023/09/26/business/target-retail-theft-...

My local target (in Ballard Seattle WA) is one of those stores. It isn't surprising: I saw someone walk out without paying for a basket of goods almost half the times I went there, so it sounds like it is really common.

It's become a convenient lie for stores to make up politically charged reasons for their store closures. For example one of the stores being closed is in the UDistrict here in Seattle. It's one of the worst targets I've ever gone to, with the store consistently having nothing on the shelves, the layout being awful and generally poorly managed. It's incredibly bad compared to the Safeway or HMart a block away and that…

Ballard is also one of those stores. Whether the actual reason is shoplifting, I saw shoplifting happen often on my visits to that store. It was like...if I was seeing this 50% of the time I was checking out, it must happen every hour or so.

> It's incredibly bad compared to the Safeway or HMart a block away and that's been a consistent experience since it opened up. None of the other stores in the area are struggling with these issues.

Ballard Safeway has a shoplifting problem, but they lack many of the goods that unhoused neighbors can fence easily for drug money (and stuff that they could is locked up). Hmart is probably even a worse target because they don't offer things like detergent, aspirin, baby milk powder, etc...that would be fenceable at all. I would still love to have an HMart in Ballard, maybe they can take over Target's space that they are vacanting.

A friend of mine works in a retail shop in Kirkland, and the shoplifting is rampant. She is often depressed at the end of the day for seeing their work stolen right in front of their eyes and being unable to do anything.

Kirkland? Really you say, what neighborhood exactly?

I would guess Totem Lake, Kirkland isn't uniformly nice.

That's like, 8 years out of date and even then Totem Lake has never been a bad neighborhood, just a sleepy one. The implication by the poster I was responding to was that Kirkland was somehow similar to South Park or something where it has some sketchy parts.

A lot of the arguments about whether SF crime statistics say X or whether stores leave for reason Y miss the point entirely: There's simply a lot of human misery and complacency towards it out in the open in SF (and in nearby areas like Oakland and Berkeley). When you've experienced it firsthand, apologists' arguments sound just like "who are you going to trust, me or your lying eyes?"

At this point I really want to go and experience it myself. Every single real life person who lives there or close by has said that things are pretty bad when I've asked them about it. Seemingly every article about it says it's pretty bad. The only people saying it's no big deal are anonymous people online claiming to have lived there forever and that it's all just right wing propaganda. What am I supposed to believe…

FWIW I visited SF back in 2021. I got a bunch of comments saying to never leave anything valuable in your car, but other than that it was a great trip. Stores were stocked and people were friendly.

Huh? Maybe. When I was in high school in Bothell 30 years ago, Totem Lake was where all the shootings were (bad things going down in totem lake became a meme before memes were a thing). They’ve gentrified a bit since then, looking at: https://www.areavibes.com/kirkland-wa/most-dangerous-neighbo...

It seems like downtown Kirkland and even Juanita (now part of Kirkland) are more dangerous now. I guess it really was just the mall.

Well, perhaps you are not looking close enough. Shoplifting is not a loud crime.

Idk what the truth is. But I visited SF and went into a Walgreens. The shelves were mostly empty and there were a number of people just sweeping stuff off the shelves into their backpacks. It was bizarre to see.

Which Walgreens was this? Give me some cross-streets or a general area.

“ The shelves were mostly empty and there were a number of people just sweeping stuff off the shelves into their backpacks”. Is that right? And what was it these people were sweeping from empty shelves? Dust?
