Yes, there are many possible conflicts of interest in mapping. This is why I'm excited to see the improving usability of Open Street Maps through apps like Organic Maps, and big commercial investments in open mapping data from the Overture Maps Foundation.
In many cases OSM has much more detail than google maps, with business listings and addresses being the biggest exceptions I have encountered. Fortunately, business listings are one of the main things added to the first data release from Overture Maps. #24Well that explains why it changed. They should add an option "focus on roads" "focus on landscape". Although to be realistic focus on roads is probably way more common, and that appears to be the new design - the roads really stand out.
Sounds like a terrible idea. Can't imagine a good UI for that.

Honestly yes, I usually am looking for restaurants etc nearby.
Restaurants, to each their own. A dozen hotels marked within a five mile radius of my home, which Google knows very well about, at all times? That’s just stupid.

yeah nobody cares about the "Latest in " menu that takes up a third of your phone's screen when you use the Maps app.
Does anyone know how to turn it off forever?

#28Apple Maps rendering surpassed Google a lil while ago. I still use Google for a variety of reasons but I do think Apple’s map design is superior.
Depends on what you're talking about. For aesthetics? No question Apple's superior. For navigation? A tossup in my experience? For discovery of places and reviews? Google's so far ahead it's not even close. Apple's interface with Google's database of places and reviews would be the holy grail.
For car based nav I stay on Google. For transit, I’ve found Apple is the way to go. I’m sure it depends on the location though

#30Apple Maps has an almost game-like UX, which is far superior to Google’s. It really does make them look amateurish in comparison.
Here in the US, Apple has surpassed Google and now has a 2-3 year lead, in my opinion (I travel quite a lot, and use both products interchangeably).
