Do you mean closed source software? Because that would rule out Hackernews. But I agree on the principle. Maybe it's the type of discussion. I would be happier if this very exciting superconductor story was unfolding somewhere else than Twitter.

“Walled garden” is orthogonal to “open source”

A walled garden is a site that degrades significantly or is unavailable without an account, like Twitter. Anyone can view all of HN modulo dead comments without an account.

You can have a fully open source walled garden.

Links behind logins wall/paywall should be totally forbidden, Twitter, Quora, news websites, etc. I don't even get why they are indexed by Google, as this is cloaking, and forbidden by the ToS (+ gets annoying)

Google gave up on checking or enforcing these things because they'd otherwise lose traffic and ad revenue.

Hackernews was released as free / open source some years back. There's a community managed fork: https://github.com/arclanguage/anarki/

Yes and no. You still need access to red phosphorous which is not all that easy to get hold of.

the 1000 C furnace is nothing to sneeze at either.

Doesn’t ring true for me at all, academia is many things but if your supervisor is onboard, you can generally do anything.
