#3i understand the appeal of "mastodon server" but isn't pleroma/akkoma/rebased more lean alternatives that are a less headache to manage in terms of the infra and less moving parts and low on resources and almost full compatibility with mastodon api?

That's the problem though - there's a whole raft of stuff that just plain doesn't work with the Oma family, either because people can't read specs (looking at you, Ivory) or the specs are woefully vague or the Omas have just done something different and aren't really receptive to "make stuff work proper" requests.
If you're putting something up as an experiment, you don't want to hamstring it from the start with these kinds of problems on top of everything else.
