I initially thought buying twitter was about converting massively overvalued TSLA stock into only somewhat overvalued TWTR stock. I now think I was wrong.

That was my thinking, too. What do you think now ?

My (very personal and unsubstantiated) opinion is that his thinking was something along the lines of "You say I can't buy Twitter for 44 billion $ and then drive it into the ground?! Ha! Watch this!"

What a bizarre brand launch... * Primary logo in top left of web changed to X * Favicon still old Twitter logo * Search bar says "Search Twitter" * Meta title still says Twitter * Tweet terminology still in use * Footer updated to © 2023 X Corp. * Dialog for upgrading to Twitter Blue now has a blue X logo but copy refers to Twitter Blue * Communities still called Twitter Communities What's the plan here and why so in…

The team have no idea as the folks who knew how to affect the change was fired.

This man is burning anything that had any value at Twitter. From an extremely valuable list of verified users to the name which is even used as a verb. There is absolutely no reason to rename Twitter. The name isn't even that stained compared to like Comcast or what ever the name was of that phone company in the 90s that sucked so bad it was renamed.

He's trying to relive his glory days as a Paypal executive.

I don’t really see what Musk is trying to accomplish.

Everything he’s done to Twitter carries the foul stench of Death by Private Equity. No product improvements, but worse reliability, more spam, and a weird desperate-looking rebrand. This is what it looks like when inept MBAs try to squeeze some more life out of a dying platform.

The strange thing here is that Musk’s acquisition was supposed to be the exact opposite. He’s not beholden to private equity masters. He’s supposed to be a product genius. He was supposed to bankroll exciting new ventures. Instead it’s kind of like MySpace meets SourceForge.

Twitter has managed to get so many words to be common. Like it's a "tweet", not "a post on facebook". It's a "retweet" or "quote tweet", not "something I shared on facebook". Why throw all this deep brand recognition away? It's like people say "google it", and google suddenly changing the name of their search.

when a word becomes too common it risks losing its trademark though

Being common has nothing to do with it. “FedEx” and “Coke” are common.

The issue is when it becomes generic which is a difference concept.

This feels like a lot of decisions of Musk w.r.t. Twitter have been, impulsive and hastily implemented.

I suppose idlewords is already saving coffee money, so he can buy Twitter for a few hundred dollars in a year or so. ;-)

A case study in brandicide.

This is much worse that the blandification of the Slack logo.

Actually the X logo itself is good on it's own terms. And would be great for a newcomer startup, but not for Twitter. Twitter is the household name. This looks like a midlife crisis.
