Now, their web clipper doesn't work very well, and spams my console when doing development work (I guess I could use a different browser profile just for Evernote)...
And their Android app has become useless. Sending me to a red screen every time.
Does anyone have any recommendations for a suitable alternative?
If you need privacy, just use git-crypt.
Anything that supports Markdown. I use just a repository hosted on GitHub that has a history and that I can access anywhere. If you need privacy, just use git-crypt.
I am dumping the Evernote subscription in the fall, so this is a big deal, though I'm not in a rush because enex import is common.
I've been using Evernote as a "write only" database. The ability to email articles to it is the main feature I've used, though I actually did this with procmail many years ago. Never used the OCR.

Trilium has some really interesting features - very much powered by a single tree but no direct markdown, its a WYSIWYG editor (which is a bonus if you like that kind of thing).
Logseq is good if you prefer the "block based" type of notes - more like Notion.
Joplin woud be my suggestion but then again I'm biased because I'm involved with the team... Markdown, mobile apps, multiple sync platforms. The thought mapping is actually its greatest strength and main reason for existing but everyone uses it as an Evernote alternative.
To me, app access is #1 feature because that's where I use my notes. Only Evernote and Obsidian have done this fine on Android. Obsidian is still quite janky with the markdown. Bear is perfect, but they don't do Android.
