Circles were so close to what I wanted, but still not quite there. I want to be able to say "these are the people who would probably like to see this post", which Circles let me do, but then it went farther and wouldn't allow others to see the post. There was no way to make the post public but tell the platform that the post was aimed at the Circle.

You can't close your account without also closing your Instagram account so that might make it more sticky.

Not an analysis, just speculative opinions.

It's not that I disagree with the speculation, but none of it is backed up. User stats as well as revenue are private. When you put out a strong statement like "revenue is collapsing" you deliver it as fact, whilst it's guess work.

Who cares? As I write this, Threads has 30 million users, 3 times the entirety of the Fediverse. But yes, surely they will block :)

They no longer require sign-in. Got scared of the reaction.

How can this be legal? I'm pretty sure that in order to legally process health data, an entity must have a plausible reason for doing so, at least in some jurisdictions. What could that reason possibly be for a social media app?

It’s apparently not legal in the EU, which is why Threads is no available here.

It’s probably only legal in jurisdictions with none (or almost none) privacy laws.

I was able to install the iOS app and post a Thread without granting any permissions. Presumably it only wants to collect health and wellness data if you want to use the app to share that data with your friends, just like it only wants to access the camera if you want to use it to take a photograph to share on Threads.

At least in this case they have confirmed[0] that it will intern with the fediverse, which makes it difference from other social network launches in the past. [0]: copy/past from threads.net: "Soon, you'll be able to follow and interact with people on other fediverse platforms, like Mastodon. They can also find people on Threads using full usernames, like @username@threads.net."

Facebook Messenger and Google Talk started off as full XMPP (Jabber) clients: I remember talking to people using Pidgin and whatever Gnome client was of the day (E-something) over my own self-hosted ejabberd.

As soon as they grow over the need for interoperability, they kill it off.
