#32Spoiler: PFAS usually (but not exclusively) around large population clusters. The Pacific Northwest of the US, aside from Portland, is looking pretty good, though.
Probably the Cascades only.
Any sufficiently old DoD site is probably an environmental disaster that is known or waiting to be discovered. Like Hanford and Bremerton.

#34It's high time for a big awareness campaign for things like this: cleaning up our water should be an immediately funded government project. Needs a interactive map with historical data, sort of like https://app.electricitymaps.com/map does for historic grid energy cleanliness. Surely, clean water—something we all need—should be an apolitical bipartisan issue, right? ...right?
Like with many things the goal may be bipartisan, but how to get there will not be Republicans will reject any funding methods that add to the national debt, or taxes businesses Democrats will reject any funding methods the come with strings attached to reduce or pull funding from other programs, or that does not excessively and punitively tax business and "the rich" So with such an impasse nothing will get done
Seems like all those corporations should be paying for cleaning up their mess. Why would we pull funding from other programs. That would be socializing the the cost while the few reap the reward.

As someone who was a life-long liberal, but worked their ass off to become a 1%er, I 100% believe that the Democrats are using people like me as scapegoats and it makes me furious. I worked and studied when my classmates or coworkers were partying, made good choices, and now I enjoy a nice life because of it.
But now all of a sudden, because I make over $400,000 I "don't pay my fair share of taxes", according to Elizabeth Warren, Bernie Sanders and Joe Biden? They can go fuck themselves. Until the Democrats stop vilifying people like me, I'm going to hold my nose and vote anti-Democrat across the board. Everyone that I talk to feel the exact same as me.

#37I note that the article does not even mention what the numbers in the chart mean in practical terms, for instance whether "7-9 PFAs detected" is something I should be urgently, moderately, or not at all worried about. I'm sure I could read the original study and find the answers to my questions, but providing that context seems like the most basic responsibility of a reporter, and the kind of thing that could make this article actually useful. As it is, it feels like the intent is to scare me without informing me in a meaningful way.

#38And not just the tap water. Eating a fish meal out of the Mississippi in Minnesota (by 3M) will give you a month's worth of PFOS if you were just drinking contaminated tap water. It's a real shame because the Mississippi mercury levels were finally down enough to eat fish.
The fact that we can't eat fish normally is something that all Americans should be mad as hell about. CEOs of chemical plants and their families should be forced to live within 1 mile of one of their plants. Things would get cleaned up right away.
I have a friend who loved sushi and she ate it at least once a week, if not more. Her daughter was born in the bottom 1% of size, so they took a blood test and her blood was poisoned with mercury from how much fish she consumed. She went through months of chelation therapy to bring it down, but the fact that she had to go through that is a testament to how fucked up our water is and how much we are killing the environment and ourselves.

Ironically there seems to be no shortage of fluoride conspiracy theories or “waters turning the frogs gay” but actual chemicals and toxins … ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Flouride doesn't need conspiracy theories to be considered dangerous.
That debate is definitely going on and has no consensus as evidenced by the fact that some cities are still removing flouride from their water and some are adding it.

Bottled water is typically tap water filled with microplastics, so that’d be worse for you.
At least in California, if you see a picture of a mountain on the label then it must be from a natural source, it can't be tap water.
