No it didn't. It got to 5 million downloads in 5 days[0] (and that's downloads, not sign-ups), and took a few months to break 10 million downloads. Threads got that many sign-ups in 4 hours[1], and I assume we'll see the 10 million mark this week. [0] https://www.androidpolice.com/2016/11/29/google-allo-hit-5-m... [1] https://www.businessinsider.com/over-2-million-signups-2-hou...

Threads exceeded 10 million a few hours ago.

And now 25 million

Navigating to threads.net on Firefox Linux gets me only a swirling-galaxy animation, with a scan code drawn on top. Non-responsive to mouse clicks or key strokes.

You can't even begin to imagine how hillariously bad it is. https://twitter.com/nikitonsky/status/1676668138866311169 (And for non logged in users, continuation: https://twitter.com/nikitonsky/status/1676668144499281940 and https://twitter.com/nikitonsky/status/1676668146663538688 ) ~30 requests to load this, totaling at ~5.5 Mb. 18 of those requests, accounting for 4 Mb, is just JavaScript. How many divs does it tak…

And I’m sure that is something every user will actually care about.

Idk, if they need something quick, og owner might have said a price they thought was way to high, and FB just said, "yea ok". I'd prob put it in the 50-100k range, but wouldnt be suprised to see 500k-1m

Meta likely didn't buy the domain. Some shell company does, then sells it to Meta.

It’s a lot of hassle to save 500k. The lawyers alone must cost more.

Well there’s plenty to choose from. Threads, Mastodon, Substack Notes, Post.News, Bluesky, and all the tangential copycats (Nostr, Spill, T2 Social, Truth Social, Hive). We have to be reaching oversaturation in this space. I really wonder if all these projects are misjudging the appetite for a Twitter replacement.

It's like they are not even trying - bluesky requires an invite, threads requires a phone. So I can't use either. Some saturation.

Do you not have phones?

I'm starting to become convinced that a significant portion of internet users in 2023 not only tolerate data mining, but have some kind of Stockholm-Syndrome-induced personal data exhibitionism fetish. I miss the era when the internet was just broadband desktop users, with none of the people who exclusively access it via smartphone.

Dear god it's not even the data mining that I find disturbing. It's the blatant manipulation, the locked/closed spaces that can't be searched or linked to, the deliberate cultivation of outrage or other engagement hacks, crappy moderation, etc. etc. I got put in Facebook jail for a month for posting an "indecent photo" which was just a picture of my son at the beach in his bathing suit that some algorithm misidentifi…

Did it ever occur to you that maybe your one-day-adult son would object to Facebook having a bunch of his biometric data (facial recognition, etc) without his consent?

I still can't view any content without signing in.

I can't load tweets on people's profile pages, but navigating to a specific tweet works. That probably kills a lot of indexers.

Probably they just wanted to fix the problem that existing tweets referenced in news articles, etc. were now unavailable, but at the same time keep things locked out to non-account holders generally.

This type of thinking is exactly why our supercomputers struggle to show even the basic text on screen.

And yes, users do care about this crap.

I was one. I was curious, clicked 'sign up' which actually just linked my Insta account rather than making a new one, had a look for like 10 seconds, thought this is kinda rubbish and closed the app. It superficially looks much like Instagram - similar people making similar posts.

> google plus was a rich mine of unbelievably high quality content from fabulous people. Naive question here from a non-user: With all that goodness, why did the product fail?

I'd argue different to the other replies so far. The reasons were: First and foremost, it's a Google product. Google's own internal structural failings are predisposed to create and then kill products. https://killedbygoogle.com It had a different usage model ("Circles") to the things people already had and understood. Twitter, Facebook etc. And it didn't map clearly to those existing understood structures. It was mo…

Yeah, I was going to respond with a grouchy "Circles are the most intuitive thing in the world" non-self-aware response :P, but you're right. A lot of people didn't know what to do with them! As is frequently the case, my mind can work differently than other people, and Circles were "YES! THIS IS WHAT I'VE BEEN LOOKING FOR!" instant-love for me. Heck, I've been trying to do it with facebook for years and I just can't - it has a "Groups" or something functionality, but it's burried and difficult to use and complete pain to setup.

Whereas for me, circles were amazing to both send and receive. I have a group of friends that are interested in photography, and a group of friends interested in computers, and a group for astronomy and philosophy and bicycling and whatnot. So I can place people and or they can subscribe to what they want to see from me.

Similarly, people would create a circle of say interesting photographers, and you can then share that circle and copy that circle and modify that circle and subscribe to that circle.

What ended up happening for me is that after a bit of time, I had a daily feed that was just... way better than any algorithm or AI or ML or privacy-invasive company ever managed to accomplish. Just high quality stuff all around. But also my friends and followers also received better quality stuff from me, as I could tailor who gets to see what.

I also liked the interface at the time, seemed to actually use my wide screen monitor, be clean, and relatively uninvasive (open FB on a 32" monitor and you barely get more useful text than on the 6" phone to this day)

For a community of entrepreneurs who understand iteration to find product-market fit, the comments here are very shortsighted. I'm pretty sure they won't age well. No competitor could ask for a better time to launch with Twitter and Reddit users disaffected. FB have the experience, reach, resources and timing to win here. Their biggest problems will be other well-funded attempts, but I can't think of any other blue-c…

Agree, Twitter is a sinking ship and Meta is there to gain users.
