Instagram does not have 3/4 billion daily active users. It's about 500 million daily active users, 2 billion monthly [0].

Also you really can't compare anything to Google+ cause they used every trick in the dark pattern book to convert every Google and YouTube account to be a Google+ """user""", whereas Threads requires installing an app and going through the (short, if you have an IG account) sign-up process.
YouTube constantly harassed you to convert your account to be a Google+ account, and there was a point where commenting on any YouTube video would automatically make a post on Google+, as if you shared the video with that comment as a caption. They're totally not comparable.

By that logic, any permission is justifiable because it all helps "personalizing content".
Let me preface, as I pointed out in my reply, a good number of the permissions listed on the app store are either not present in the app or disabled by default in the app.
That said, it is a social network prioritizing text based discussion. Using location to prioritize content local to you seems appropriate (and is disabled by default, so you'd need to enable it via prompt).
Things like "Personal information" requesting "Political or religious beliefs", "Sexual orientation", etc. have some consideration of being problematic certainly.
I'm not entirely sure why the health permission, I listed for personalizing content, but it is honestly just a guess. Does not actually appear to be a permission present in the app currently.
Regarding calendar, the only other permission I labeled with personalizing content, it is disabled by default, and could possibly be used for other purposes (scheduling events, etc) so without knowing more it is a guess and possibly mislabeled by me.

It's pretty interesting to see Meta uncharacteristically embrace an open social networking protocol. They may see that their social graph alone will not be enough to create critical mass adoption for their new social network.
I'm assuming, but hoping they're not following Microsoft's Embrace, Extend, Extinguish strategy.

I noticed this with the base experience after auto-following all my Instagram follows.
But what isn't in the app yet is a "trending" / "recommended" section, which I imagine is ready to go once they bootstrap enough data for it. Any person or entity with PR value or internet clout is likely already gearing up to post across both platforms, so a typhoon of data is about to flow in.
Once that exists then they can move to the next stage of enveloping most of what Twitter has to offer.
My question is, will Elon ban people from posting links to their Threads accounts?

Let me CHOOSE if I want to see "suggested" or "promoted" content. Have "followers only" and "monetized influencer crap" tabs. At least make it an option.
I would love it if some service did have an explicit option for the visibility of "monetized influencer crap". I'd be tempted to use them purely to reward their honesty.
Would be fun innit but in short time there would be hundreds complaining posts and deconstruction videos taking on why "monetized influencer crap" is problematic.

There's an important point you make. Google plus failed. But a few of us loved it, because of its interface and ease of managing for the large part, but also because we interacted differently with and with different people than on Facebook instagram etc. Whereas Facebook to your point is dominated by my friends and family (but less and less their original content and more and more with copied "memes), Google plus rap…
Threads is definitely going to be dominated by friends and family. It already is, it’s just that and memes. Twitter is much closer to your Google+, and Threads in no way will be anything like that from what I’ve seen of it over the past few hours
