I signed up. And the first thing I saw was a whole bunch of posts from people I don't follow. They had the opportunity to learn directly from Twitter's mistakes, and they failed right from the start.

A friend of mine signed up for a quick glance to see what their feed would bring up, since there's no way to get just who you follow. The literal first handful of things she saw were transphobia, racism, misogyny, or conspiracy theories.

I wonder how much the threads.net domain cost Updated Date: 2023-04-07T13:53:29Z Creation Date: 1997-05-27T23:00:00Z

Facebook/Instagram has owned the domain for a while as they had a prior Threads app as far back as 2019, shut down in 2021.

From WayBack, it looks like they bought the domain in 2010:

How would you bootstrap the feed?

Let me CHOOSE if I want to see "suggested" or "promoted" content. Have "followers only" and "monetized influencer crap" tabs. At least make it an option.

No one wants to do that right away. They want to start with some random popular content and then have it refine down with time.

i dont think this sort of hate speech is appropriate for HN.

if there’s one thing that isnt needed here, or on Threads, it’s willful hatred and anger at others’ existence.

It also seems like a problem for anonymity. On Twitter, I can create multiple accounts and I can stay anonymous if I like. I don't know about IG, but FB only allows one account. I don't want my info leaking somehow. I also have a very different Twitter space from my FB space. Though my IG is also different from my FB.

Instagram lets you create unrelated "subaccounts" that are tied to your main account. I have one just so I can have a public account that I use to follow F1 drivers. This is great because I don't get spoilers on my main Instagram account and I also can post pictures from F1 events, etc. that my family wouldn't care about.

I know you can switch accounts on instagram. How do you make sub accounts? When I searched I only found info on multiple accounts

You can't cold start like that. There has to be something when you open the app or it's DOA.

Of course you can start like that. Look all they need to do is pay MySpace Tom to come out of retirement and be everyone's first friend on Instagram threads.

Some will say, "well, why not Zuck?" Well, androids still have that uncanny valley effect and they're not quite as relatable.

What problem are they solving? No one has any idea. Info keeps exploding instead of shrinking.

> What problem are they solving? Twitter.

Twitter is great, there is no problem, I don’t understand.

There's plenty of platforms that start like that. You never saw them because they died.

Ok, I'll shoot: AOL Instant Messenger. Runaway success, 20ish year run. MySpace also started like that and so did Facebook itself. You had to add friends and visit their pages manually to see what they were up to, feeds came later.

The permissions[1] the android app wants are rather terrifying. Think I'll pass. [1] https://play.google.com/store/apps/datasafety?id=com.instagr...

Which permission specifically? They all seem valid for what the app does (and most are not present in app or disabled by default) Location - for providing localized content (disabled by default) Personal Info - for providing log in and personalizing content (questionable) Financial Info: For in app payment/subscription (disabled by default) Health - for personalizing content (not present in app and could be mislabele…

By that logic, any permission is justifiable because it all helps "personalizing content".

Idk, if they need something quick, og owner might have said a price they thought was way to high, and FB just said, "yea ok". I'd prob put it in the 50-100k range, but wouldnt be suprised to see 500k-1m

Meta likely didn't buy the domain. Some shell company does, then sells it to Meta.

that makes zero difference to the cost
