Mastodon's biggest problem is if you want to join a general purpose server with a level headed administrator you only have a couple of options. Most servers resemble joining an irc channel or phpbb forum where a mod will ban you for making fun of their favorite video game.

The Fediverse has been successful at attracting techies with time and money, but instead of them using it to help a mid size general public instance they use it to make their own server where they can be the ones imposing the bullshit bans.

I've found Bluesky to be uninteresting, and my feed is also pretty dead now. People sign up and then abandon it. I don't bother checking much anymore or handing out the invite codes that I'm accumulating.

Ironically, even the people who say that Mastodon is a dead end and Bluesky is more promising are posting more on Mastodon than on Blueksy. ;-)

RSS is still very widely used. Companies like Feedly have built a livelihood on it. RSS is used extensively in editorial and publishing back offices.

The AP, for example, uses it as a technical means to facilitate content syndication to thousands of their affiliates and customers.

There’s an extant and modern native/mobile and web app ecosystem and no shortage of libraries to leverage it.

Because their motives are suspect?

Their motives are probably compliance with the interoperability provisions of the European Union’s upcoming Digital Markets Act:

Facebook has already embraced, extended, and extinguished RSS. The expectation is that they will do the same with ActivityPub if given a chance. AFAIK Facebook never supported RSS, more’s the pity, nor Twitter. A big part of the pathologies of Facebook come from control over the feed prioritization algorithm, which means it favors their interest, maximizing “engagement” and thus polarizing content. This goes away entirely if you use a RSS feed reader with your own prioritization and filtering.

It supported a few feeds in 2007, and that was covered as “Facebook is opening up” and the feeds having existed for a while.

It’s a negative feedback loop.

Poster A posts, sees interaction is low, and stops posting. Viewer A sees P-A stops posting, checks less. P-B sees posts and interactions decline, focuses on higher interaction platforms, meaning V-A has even less reason to check. When new people join, they find no one using the platform and abandon it shortly after, leading to a wasteland.

This is like if some mail host decided to block all mail from gmail domains.

Actually, that’s rather par for the course for a federated network. Don’t like it? Make your own fediverse node. That’s literally the entire point.
