“Mass shootings”, as in the people who were shot had mass. Redefining mass shootings to conveniently include gang violence really dilutes the term to meaninglessness.

Why is it not a mass shooting if a gang is involved?

It’s not a mass shooting when it’s 1 death and 3 injuries between groups of people actively hostile to each other.

It’s like calling it a mass shooting when police shoot bank robbers brandishing firearms and kill just one of them.

Hysterics designed to juice stats for a political cause.

In the realm of the sea where no light dares to tread, An iron giant named Titan its journey had led, Built to traverse the blue deep, a mission clear, To explore the Titanic's ghost, obscured by fear.

Titan, oh Titan, the sea's most stalwart knight, Bathed in cold silence, yearning for daylight, A sub of sturdy steel and human determination, Set forth to reveal the past's doomed creation.

A journey steeped in echoes, through waters unknown, Into the abyss, where sun's grace is never shown. Titan searched for the Titanic, a ghost in the haze, Through the endless night, in a chilling ballet's craze.

Beneath the waves, where pressure sways like the titan's fist, Where the sea's lament whispers a chilling tryst, The skeletal Titanic sleeps, in a shroud of mystery, A timeless tale of man's hubris and history.

Titan neared its quest's end, the Titanic in sight, A monolith of memory, veiled in the eternal night. But the sea's cruel clasp tightened, a relentless grip, As the ghost ship waited in stoic fellowship.

A sound then shattered the silence, a mournful sigh, Titan under the pressure, its limits defy. Its hull creaked, it shivered, it began to groan, And in the darkness, Titan was suddenly alone.

In its quest for discovery, to the abyss, it fell, Imploded in silence, no one to bid farewell. Titan and Titanic, now silent together, A testament to humanity's reach and tether.

Two steel giants resting deep below the foam, Far from the surface light, far from home. The Titan's tale echoes through the seafarer's lore, A lesson from the deep, from the ocean floor.

A tale of two Titans, of steel and cold precision, Both met their end in a haunting collision. Under the crushing sea, they found their tomb, In the silent world, where no roses bloom.

Their names will echo, in the salt-tinged spray, Titan and Titanic, forever bound in a tragic ballet. A dance in the deep, where light has no reign, In the realm of the sea, where triumph and tragedy reign.

More than that, one report mentioned the US Navy notified the search teams that they heard an explosion Sunday night and used it to limit the search area. The US Navy has literally has experience detecting underwater explosions (see project Azorian). It's not guaranteed of course, but any loud sound near the point of contact loss seems pretty open shut. Imo, it made a more interesting story in a slow news cycle. How…

600 refugees drowned in the mediterranean and the captain of one of the non profit rescue vessels operating in the mediterranean is facing 20 years in prison. barf.

Both media reports are vanity. They don't impact the reader, don't change society and have no repercussions. Both are read for (different) emotional value. People don't change their life or opinion because of either of them.

I appreciate the imagery but you’re in danger of over romanticising the reality: the sea wasn’t cruel. It is nature. The reason this happened, much like with the Titanic, was human hubris.

About 1000 children died of malaria yesterday. 1000 died today. And another 1000 will die tomorrow.

I'm really curious about the carbon fibre design, I'm not a material expert but I do dive and for tanks they work because of the internal pressure of tank. The 'weaving' is supposed to be link connecting your two hands together interlocking fingers, in one direction you will meet a full resistance, but in the opposite direction your fingers will unlock. I have no idea but seems to me if there is external pressure the…

Your intuition is spot on, carbon fiber is much better at tensile loads than compressive loads. Tensile load capacity is pretty much the resin that keeps the fibers from moving. The most I could find about the design > The entire pressure vessel is comprised of two titanium hemispheres, two matching titanium interface rings, and the 142 cm (56") internal diameter, 2.4-m (100") long carbon fiber wound cylinder – the l…

It's wild how carbon fibre is a insanely powerful in it's application yet it's misused.

I'd like to say it's caveat being as you mentioned but honestly, given then community in this field, even the technical diving alone. Someone must have said it to them.

Thanks for some numbers, maybe tomorrow will play with the simulations to determine the AP's that could collapse the craft. The titanium hemispheres are probably the best option but the sealing would need to be almost clinical.

I'm anxious just thinking about the construction of this sub.

If the explosion was heard Sunday night wouldn’t this mean there’s a possibility the crew was stuck for some time and knew they were likely going to die?

Not a chance. The whole problem with subs is that water weighs about 8lb per gallon. So, at 4000m you're looking at something between 4500 5500 psi. Thats a small truck worth of pressure every square inch in the hull. Once you breach the structure, think crushing a tin can in the middle, things collapse pretty fast. As do bodies. If you figure your body is 2 foot by 6 foot, the pressure would be like parking 100 full…

> creaking of the bulkheads

One of the counterintuitive features of submarines is that they're not built to be waterproof at the surface. The various parts of the hull aren't welded shut and instead rely on the external pressure to press them shut at depth. Making them waterproof at the surface ends up making them less able to resist the pressure at depth.

What the heck happened to that "photonic shield" that Bill Gates' foundation was working on to zap mosquitoes with lasers? It's been years now. Seems like a good idea and they successfully prototyped it.

While on principle I agree. It doesn't matter. There can be 2 problems at the same time. Whatever people focus on shouldn't be a topic. Edit: That seems far more callous than it was meant. You're right, people are forced to travel the sea almost daily, desperate people will do anything. This IS different. And hits different because it was a choice, with a real discussion about "Hey, it's really possible you can die,…

Not all of them: the son of the Pakistani businessman was truly innocent here. He was terrified of going on this foolhardy voyage and only went along because he didn't want to upset his dumb dad.
