#2should be possible...find the handler for a single collapse and call it for all comments

#3RES is one thing I miss from Reddit. HN needs something similar. I would like to have all replies to root comments collapsed by default. That made Reddit easier to read.

I like that idea. Perhaps you could turn that into a poll [1] item with a description of how that would look and work. If a lot of people like the idea then consider emailing the link to the poll to dang. Participation may be higher on a Monday.
