When you move, keep your authoritative dns's @ MX pointed to *asmx.google.com or whatever your current MX setup is.

Registering new gTLDs was never exclusive to domains.google.com (and I think such is disallowed by ICANN), so it sounds like registry is untouched.

I appreciate they don't have a dozen stupid upsells on domains like GoDaddy. But $20 a year is a straight ripoff.

Low cost has never been the priority. If you don't value their service at $20/yr they have no problem with you going elsewhere.

1: Price (66% increase in price for no additional value)

2: Uncertainty around Squarespace's technical ability. Are they going to be a rock solid DNS provider? When DNS is down it is no fun. I left a smaller registrar because they couldn't handle large DDoS attacks (we weren't targets, but were affected).

Not just one TLD, I think they have over 40! They must be in the top 3 by number of TLDs owned.

You don’t need to be a registrar to own a TLD, but in their case it seemed pretty essential to their strategy.
