Problem is, most of that US GDP is going to a few billionaires. There's a massive impoverished underclass in the US, who are not going to be able to drive much consumption. GDP is an incredibly reductive measure.

every country has an underclass. there is no rigorously defensible way to say that americans are poorer than europeans. none whatsoever.

Every country has an underclass, the US one is just much bigger proportionally compared to the US one.

I do use terraform, but not for everything, and neither do you.

I only use the AWS console to check logs, monitor batch jobs, and check spending. I don't do state configuration in the AWS console.

This is called Stockholm Syndrome and there are people who can help. AWS UI is filled with manual and tedious bullshit to do every day things. It really doesn't have to be this way, making things annoying to configure correctly leads to mistakes or lazy overly broad permissions. If they weren't the first they wouldn't have made it.

I'm not sure "don't use the UI" is a valid defense for AWS' UX being terrible.

Hetzner lacks a lot of features to count as a proper cloud. Still wishing for managed kubernetes.

Managed k8s probably wouldn't count as a bare bones cloud.

Upcloud, Vultr, Scaleway, Linode, DigitalOcean, etc have all included managed k8s. I think the standards have moved up and it's pretty much a standard feature of most bare bones cloud now.

they're dying sooner because of diseases of ... affluence. and we can expect the new weight loss drugs to make a noticeable dent in that (at the cost of who-knows-what side effects, but they can't be as big a killer as obesity)

I have a bridge to sell you... Unfortunately, it is likely those medicines will drive the next wave of chronic disease.
