Yep radio waves degradation is due to the inverse square law. The strength of the signal is determined by the inverse of the distance squared. So the drop off is pretty extreme.

Seems like they are amazing at getting a good deal, which is not the same as being amazing at PR.

Considering there is not another US Navy to lend them some jets for filming, I'd suggest the DoD had a pretty strong hand.

The most advanced tech and research, as an overall, would be trivial for an advanced alien to decide. And the US has been leading in those categories for 80 years at least. The notion that it's impossible to figure out whether an advanced alien would think Afghanistan or the US have more advanced tech/research/science, is absurd. And if you can make that distinction, you can keep going.

I mean.... come on people, try harder.

One simple explanation is that Grusch's story is mostly true.

eg: There is a secret project, they have been doing reverse engineering, and they did keep it from congress for a very long time.

This is all the stuff that Grusch can probably prove himself without second hand reporting.

It's unclear what the distances involved are. It might just be a few years or months of travel time, say for a loitering Von Neumann probe from the Kuiper belt.

The US is winning (or has won and keeps on winning) the Conquer Victory, the Diplomacy Victory, and the Culture Victory. I think that's the main means of winning Civilization? Been years since I played one.

I like how you're using a game that obviously reflects the values of the culture that created it to make the point that that culture is better.

If Civilization were made in Denmark, you'd have Population Happiness Victory and that's about it.

Why does it have to be a conspiracy? Some small but significant portion of the population is mentally ill, and it seems likely a few would hear a joke ("we keep the alien space ships through that door, I'd show you but I'd have to kill you"), take it way too literally, and it becomes the focus of their mental illness. That seems not only possible but probable given the size the military industrial complex.
