Through my business, I own a fully-specced 16" MacBook Pro. But I also personally own an iMac (Retina 5K, 27-inch, Late 2015) for design work. The same one that has, for the time being, been replaced by the Mac Studio and Mac Studio Display.

I can run up to macOS Monterey officially on this thing, but I haven't purchased new hardware to replace it, because it's such a bad deal compared to my still functioning studio-non-"Studio" hardware.

I wonder how many of us are waiting for a new 27" 5k iMac?

I accepted the Google spyware and put ChromeOS Flex (https://chromeenterprise.google/os/chromeosflex/) on my ancient MacBook Air; at least it gets security patches now, and I can use it for basic tasks (including running a Linux VM on it and Linux apps (like emacs) that appear as native apps).

Its hardware support seems great - trackpad, wifi, etc all worked on install.

It's not a bad way to extend the life of some pretty nice hardware

Obligatory mention of OpenCore Legacy Patcher

This 2013 iMac that got cut off at Catalina runs Big Sur flawlessly from an external SSD

So Hackintosh will still be a thing for at least 5-7 years! I might get a mac mini sooner..

For anyone still running macOS 11 Big Sur, the time has come to either upgrade your operating system, upgrade your hardware, or take your chances running without patches.

You'll still get security updates for devices from 2013

It still is a shame tho, I wish they had an open source Core OS for older devices, so they'd still get some community driven development and security patches

OpenCore Legacy Patcher is such an amazing/impressive project.

Thanks to OCLP, hello from an ancient 2008 Mac Pro that nonetheless is running Ventura 13.4 flawlessly (albeit with a newer GPU). :)

Love OCLP, but there’s definitely a trade-off in terms of root-of-trust security.

I keep an old iMac for family browsing and some school work that’s running Ventura thanks to OCLP, but not allowing anyone to sign in to iCloud on it due to not having a trusted bootloader.

This is perhaps overkill and it sucks that it’s a choice that needs to be made at all.
